South Africa mourns the loss of veteran actress Cynthia Shange

South Africa is mourning the loss of Cynthia Shange, who has died at the age of 76.Her family confirmed that the veteran actress and former beauty queen passed away in the early hours of today in a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after a period of illness.

Shange rose to prominence in the 1970s when she was crowned Miss Africa South Africa, going on to represent the country at the Miss World 1972 in London, where she placed fifth, a significant achievement at a time of segregated pageantry.

She later built a long-standing acting career, with standout roles in Udeliwe, the mini-series Shaka Zulu, and the SABC2 soapie Muvhango, where she remained a familiar face to audiences across generations.Her contribution to the industry was recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Film and Television Awards, as well as honours from the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.

She is survived by her children Sihle, Nonhle, Ayanda and Benele Thema, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Details around memorial and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
