Rahul Mishra’s Couture Collection brought the cosmos alive with Indian hand-embroidery and craft techniques

At Paris Couture Week, Indian designer Rahul Mishra showcased an intricate body of work that encapsulates the entire universe.

As a self-proclaimed “scientist at heart” Mishra says he is always intrigued by the worlds within, and for his 20th season showcasing in Paris, he took an introspective look towards finding inspiration in galactic and earthly bodies.

The garments featured exquisitely ornate embroidery, sequins, stardust, whirls, and waves - all hand-sewn by over 1000 artisans from Indian craft communities.

Volumnious, abstract shapes and layered ruffled garments were reminiscent of deep sea creatures and extra-terrestrial beings.

Further in our excursion “down the river of time” Mishra also interpreted mortal constructs like skyscrapers and insects.

In his collection notes, the designer develops the concept of the sanskrit statement “Aham Brahmasmi” (“I am the cosmos”), alluding to the thin barrier of physicality that separates us all from other “vast and bewildering” realities.

In all corners of the universe, there is no doubt that Rahul Mishra took couture craftsmanship to an intergalactic level.
