In a seven-minute debut release, Vuyo Viwe makes a clear artistic statement with her new single “Geza.” Built on live instrumentation and restraint, the track leans into atmosphere and intention - introducing her sound with confidence and clarity while hinting at the depth of work still to come - a strong step in her rising career.
“Geza” opens with strings and keys, setting a steady, reflective foundation. The arrangement stays minimal, allowing the sound to unfold slowly and naturally. Vocal chants enter and immediately anchor the track. The first line “Gez’ izandla zami” (cleanse my hands) sits at the centre, shaping the song’s emotional and spiritual direction.

A key strength of the single is the ensemble behind it. Vuyo Viwe is joined by Kozo Zwane on guitar, Solethu Madasa on keys, Mandox on drums, Junior Matsila on trombone, and Ofentse Sebula on alto saxophone. Each musician contributes with control and sensitivity, adding texture without overwhelming the core idea of the song.

Even with multiple instruments in play, nothing feels excessive. Instead, the track maintains a focused, almost meditative structure that allows Viwe’s vision to stay at the centre.
“Geza” also positions Vuyo Viwe more clearly within a growing wave of contemporary South African artists who are experimenting within jazz and soul spaces. Her work sits comfortably in this shift - rooted in live instrumentation, but open to exploration and mood-driven composition. As a flautist, vocalist, and composer, she continues to build a sound that doesn’t rely on strict genre boundaries. Instead, she leans into feeling, texture, and space, shaping music that is guided by instinct. With “Geza,” Vuyo introduces herself, cleanly and deliberately, with a track that feels like a foundation of her artistry.
Beyond the release, Vuyo Viwe has been steadily building her live performance presence. Earlier this year, she performed at Thandiswa Mazwai’s Sankofa debut concert after winning a competition that secured her a festival opening act slot.
She has also performed at Kids Love Jazz and the newly opened Hugh’s Jazz Lounge, further positioning herself within South Africa’s live jazz and emerging music spaces. With “Geza,” she continues to refine a sound shaped by live performance, spiritual themes, and understated arrangement - focused, controlled, and deliberate.
