Registering to vote is a simple process and can be done either online or in person.
To qualify, you must be a South African citizen and at least 16 years old to register, although you'll need to be 18 or older to vote on election day. You'll also need a valid South African ID book, Smart ID card or a temporary identity certificate.The easiest way to register is through the IEC's online voter registration portal, where you can register for the first time, update your address, check your voter registration status or confirm your voting station. If you'd rather do it in person, you can visit your nearest IEC office during office hours.

The IEC has also announced a final nationwide voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August 2026, giving South Africans another opportunity to register or update their details before the election. The 2026 Local Government Elections are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. If you miss the registration weekend, there's still time. Eligible voters can continue registering online or at an IEC office until the voters' roll officially closes after the election is proclaimed. However, the IEC recommends registering as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute complications.
