Check labels on your clothes

These provide important information that helps you decide if your clothing is safe to wash in your washing machine, the right setting, and what temperature you should use.

Wash your clothes immediately after a sweat session.

First things first, if you got super sweaty in your workout gear, wash everything immediately after. Bullock says it's important to "remove bacteria, which causes a lingering smell." And Chiamulon adds that the material of your clothes can begin to deteriorate if they sit in the dirty laundry for too long.

Separate the brights from the whites and textures.

Use basic laundry rules when it comes to your workout gear. "Wash bright colours separately to avoid bleeding and use detergents meant for bright colours to help maintain color," says Bullock. And don't even think about mixing fluffy textures with them. According to Clarkson, you should "not wash your clothes with towels or fleece garments to prevent lint transfer."

Use the delicate cycle.

Just remember, your workout clothes are durable, but you should still be gentle with them. Bullock says to "wash them in cold water and on the delicate cycle to avoid loss of colour." She recommends also using a lingerie bag for smaller items.

Hang them out to dry.

All the experts agree, it's most important to avoid the dryer as much as possible. "High heat will eventually break down the elasticity and destroy the fabric," says Clarkson. Instead she recommends hanging them to dry. If you're in a pinch and absolutely have to use the dryer, Bullock says to "use a low setting for 20 minutes or less to avoid the material shrinking or losing it's shape."

Avoid bleach and fabric softeners.

It's not just the dryer that can cause damage. "Harsh detergents and softeners will mess with the technical features of the fabrics," says Clarkson.
