It has been a big year in music for South African female artists from the rise of Sho Madjozi to the upcoming on-screen celebration of the iconic Lebo Mathosa.

The annual GLAMOUR Women of the Year (WOTY) will soon be taking place, where we acknowledge inspirational South African women excelling in ground-breaking fields.

At this event, Glamour honours fierce and fabulous women working in 10 different industries that range from Goodwill & Activism to Digital Influence.

To keep you hyped about WOTY until the 23rd of November 2019 when the country’s most Glamourous event takes place, we’ve compiled a list of the top music moments of 2019 where ladies in the industry completely slayed on and off stage. Take a look at the list below.

 

Sho Madjozi – John Cena

BET Award winner, and SAMA Newcomer of the Year and Female Artist of the Year 2019, Sho Madjozi is currently the Queen of South African music. The artist recently released a track called John Cena that went viral. During an interview on The Ellen show the pro wrestler turned actor did the dance challenge to the John Cena song. The Lebo Mathosa Biopic

The Lebo Mathosa Story is a six-part series, set to air on the 6th of November 2019 on BET Africa and will illustrate the story behind the life and times of one of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians.

With Bahumi Madisakwane, daughter of Somizi Mhlongo, playing Mathosa in her younger years and KB Motsilanyane taking the adult lead, the story begins in the heart of the 90s during the kwaito evolution when Mathosa rose to iconic fame and became a celebrated South African household name and role model for the youth.

 

Shekhinah, the most streamed

Former SA Idols contestant and Suited singer, Shekhinah Thandi Donnell, better known as Shekhinah topped the Apple music charts this year when she was announced as the most streamed female South African artist of 2019. Take a look at one of our favourite Shekhinah tracks below.

Lizzo’s BET Awards 2019 performance

Melissa Vivianne Jefferson, better known as the feisty American rapper and singer Lizzo, blew up this year when her two tracks Juice and Truth Hurts took the world by storm. Even though there is currently controversy and plagiarism whispers around her track ‘Juice’, there is no doubt that this body positive Queen knows how to put on a performance. Hot Girl Summer

The song on everyone’s brain this Summer, Megan Thee Stallion - Hot Girl Summer ft. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign, has been on every cool kid playlist since its release on August 9, 2019. The collaboration featuring the American rapper and songstress debuted atop the US Rolling Stone 100, marking the first number one for all of the performers, and the first female collaboration and fourth overall song to reach the top of that chart.
