Here’s how yoga can help you beat a double chin

We don’t need to tell you this but you’re beautiful just the way you are and if you’re rocking a double chin and owning it, then we’re here for it. However, if you’d love to add a little definition to your face, yoga might be the answer.

Not only is the exercise brilliant for tone, definition and general wellbeing, it can also help banish a double chin.

As Amy Pantlin, founder of AEC Yoga, explains: “There are some asanas that can really assist in working on these problem areas.

“Postures that typically help are ‘heart opening postures’ or those that require an extension of the arms behind you like Camel pose (Ustrasana), which stretches the entire front of the body – thighs, groins, hips – but also the throat.

“Other effective heart opener postures like Fish posture (Matsyasana) elongate the front of the neck stretching out the chin area.”

Amy explains that ‘face yoga’ is also a new phenomenon that aims to relax and tone the muscles in the face just like a regular yoga session.

“The aim of yoga is to release tension and relax muscles in the body; it’s the same case with face yoga, which just focuses solely on the muscles and any tension, especially in the face.”

Although Amy notes that there has been some speculation as to the effectiveness of face yoga (with some arguing that it could potentially lead to earlier wrinkle formation!), she believes ‘The Giraffe’ is a good exercise to target the chin area and it’s simple to do.

“Just simply tilt your head back, stretching out the neck, and then bring the head back down, holding each for 4 breaths.”

“Essentially, the best way to help sculpt this area of the body and target that double chin is to encourage elongating the front part of the neck so to stretch the chin.

“So if you’re tight for time and can’t fit any yoga practice into your day, it’s an easy exercise to complete first thing in the morning, last thing at night or even at your desk during the day.”

Namaste.
