Top tips for maintaining knotless braids while exercising

Protective hairstyles are multi-faceted. Not only do they shield curly and coily afro-textured hair from environmental aggressors but they also encompass a rich and varied cultural history. Such styles range from sleek and straight knotless braids to intricate cornrows and floaty French curls. What’s more, they’re often relatively low-maintenance, so long as you have a suitable aftercare guide in place.

“I find braids to be one of the lowest maintenance styles that you can have,” model and content creator Shukria Hussain tells British Vogue, whose newest haircare video has garnered 1.8 million views. In comparison to sew-in extensions, lace-front wigs and natural hairstyles, “there’s barely any upkeep – most mornings my hair is already done!”

It can be tempting, to throw your braids up into a ponytail and dive straight into a Pilates class, hoping that the sweat and movement won’t ruin the style over time. I should know. Been there, done that and sheepishly scooped a fallen hair extension into my gym bag to prove it.

Here, experts share their top tips for knotless braid maintenance while exercising, so that you don’t have to compromise between looking or feeling your best.

Which knotless braid styles are popular for warmer weather?

According to celebrity hairstylist and Vogue contributing beauty editor, Charlotte Mensah, “medium-sized knotless braids are an excellent choice for exercising because they’re low-tension and allow for the application of scalp oils and pomades – while being easy to style with hats and hairbands.”

Ama Hair Salon co-founder Silas Baiden found that goddess braids were also a highly requested option for girls looking for a versatile spring/summer hairstyle. “The majority of our clients chose them, not just for their beauty but also for their fullness,” he explains. “One client even mentioned that the extra volume helped to keep her warm – a cosy, yet stylish option all in one.”

Which knotless braid styles are the most versatile?

Small knotless braids are versatile enough to be worn loose but plaited into secure plaits, as well. “Smaller braids can be styled in a number of ways, from elegant up-dos to sleek ponytails. They also last longer than larger knotless braids,” says Mensah.

Baiden agrees, citing smaller knotless braids as the most versatile out of the bunch. “Clients love them because they can be styled in multiple ways, including an effortless messy bun – they also tend to last better over time than standard knotless braids, maintaining a softer, more natural look as the weeks go by. Many clients enjoy the way the braids can be swept into a casual up-do, making this style perfect for both everyday wear and special occasions.”

Which knotless braid styles are best for sports and exercise?

When it comes to styles that are comfortable for regular exercise, experts recommend going shorter.

“For active clients, I recommend bra-length knotless braids with minimal extensions,” Baiden shares. “Lightweight, these braids are easy to tie back during workouts and are low-tension.” Plus, they’re lower maintenance and allow for more freedom of movement.

Mensah agrees, sharing that “when we work out, we often do a lot of movement, and longer knotless braids can tug and pull on our edges – a shorter length worn in a ponytail won’t pull on the scalp as much.”

What are your top tips for maintaining knotless braids while exercising?

As for maintenance, the pros have a few crucial tips to note. “Secure your braids in a low ponytail or bun to keep them out of your face,” Mensah instructs. This will minimise any chance of getting those dreaded tension headaches from snatching it into a high ponytail. “Also, wear a silk fabric headband or silk scarf to absorb sweat from your hairline and to protect your edges.”

Baiden suggests using “a lightweight mousse, to smooth down flyaways and keep braids looking fresh.” This can be applied just before you head out to the class, or in the locker room if you’re short on time. Use just a small amount, as this will minimise the amount of buildup on the scalp, which inevitably occurs when sweat anyways.

How long should you keep braids in if you work out a lot?

The age-old question. When should you take your braids out? Especially if you lead an active lifestyle.

“Braids can last just as long for active clients as for those who don’t exercise, depending on how well they’re cared for,” Baiden outlines. “The main consideration is sweat, as some people perspire more heavily through their scalp. To keep the hair fresh, wash your braids weekly.”

A fun hack to keep your parting intact is to grab a wig cap or breathable hairnet and gently cleanse your scalp with a clean, unused toothbrush and dot of shampoo. Rinse, repeat, and you have a speedy scalp refresh without resorting to dry shampoo.

If you need a strict time-frame to work to, Mensah says braids should be kept in for a “maximum of six weeks, to avoid damage, build-up and natural hair breakage from the sweat.”
