The latest scoop on all things nail trends and the best advice for the summer season

Sorbet’s Education and Recruitment Manager Bonieta Sonnekus and National Nail Technology Educator Hope Matlakala share the latest nail trends and tips for summer.

CURRENT TRENDS IN THE SALON

Pearlcore, a curved-line curved- micro-trend that focuses on incorporating pearls, is intriguing because it complements any style, whether you’re going for a classic French manicure or an over-the-top combination with long extensions and colour. The most popular is a medium-length style with an almond shape.

TRENDS TO TRY THIS SEASON

This summer, colour ombres and marbling will set the scene, not forgetting the traditional ombre for the more conservative – and you can add some Pearlcore. Medium length with a ballerina shape is popular, as well as a natural-looking oval shape.

THE BEST NAIL CARE WHEN WEARING GEL EXTENSIONS OR TIPS

Use cuticle oil daily, so ingredients that aren’t

compatible with gels can’t lift them. This moisturises

the cuticle and nourishes the matrix bed (the root),

where the nail plate grows. In other words, if a new

nail grows from an area of nourishment and moisture,

it’ll automatically be in a healthier condition.

PREVENTING BREAKAGE

If you’re using nail extensions or enhancements, we advise having your nails refilled not more than four weeks

apart, even every two weeks, depending on the natural

nail’s health. When preventing natural nails’ breakage, using a nail strengthener is always a good idea. There are

various nail strengtheners, but you should use the

correct one, i.e., nourishment or hydration. If your nails still break, that could indicate an underlying health issue.

COLOURS TO TRY THIS SEASON

We’ll soon be entering the warmer seasons, and your

choice of colour will be up to you. But consider your skin

tone, wardrobe and style. For warmer seasons, pinks and

salmon shades are always a winner.

A guide to choosing the best colour for your skin type

The easiest way to remember what colour suits your skin tone is to look at your skin and see if it has a more red, blue, yellow or orange one (this is relevant regardless of your skin colour). If your skin is more red, steer clear of pink tones. For blue skin tones, choose colours that aren’t ‘cold’ or ‘grey’, as that might make your skin look unnatural. For skin tones that are more yellow or orange, you can go for cooler tones of colour and ones that don’t have red undertones, as those could make the skin tone look more red. That doesn’t mean that if you have a certain undertone, you can’t wear a particular colour because you can. For every colour you choose, there’ll be a tone in that colour to complement your skin.
