With her latest collection Savannah, Nigerian-British designer, Banke Kuku invites the world into a landscape of warmth, resilience, and reflection. Presented in Lagos before an audience of creatives, patrons, and cultural figures, the runway presentation was more than a fashion event, it was a meditation on identity, belonging, and care for both land and legacy
For Kuku, Savannah is deeply personal, an ode to Northern Nigeria, its vast plains, golden light, and enduring spirit. It is also, she says, her love letter to fashion and to Nigeria itself.“The savannah holds a quiet power,” Kuku shares. “It reminds me of the strength and serenity that define our people. This collection is my way of honouring that; translating emotion into texture, light, and form.”Just as her previous collection Oceans explored the depth and fluidity of water, Savannah turns its gaze to the earth — the dry, sun-drenched expanses of the North — revealing beauty in restraint, endurance, and balance. It is a story of coexistence: between land and sky, heritage and innovation, sustainability and soul.
An Ode to the North
At its core, Savannah is a portrait of Northern Nigeria’s majesty, not the loud, postcard kind, but one found in patience and quiet persistence. The collection channels the rhythm of the Sahel: vast yet intimate, serene yet strong.“The North represents a kind of majesty that doesn’t announce itself,” Kuku says. “It’s a place of silence and depth, and that’s the spirit I wanted to capture; strength that feels gentle, beauty that endures.”Her textiles mirror that tension: sun-drenched hues of rust, clay, and faded jade; painterly motifs inspired by wind-carved dunes and desert flora; flowing silks that move like air across the plains. The designs are deliberate yet unforced; relaxed tailoring, softened kaftans, easy layers that reflect both adaptability and dignity. Each look feels like a living poem of the region: rooted, radiant, and quietly powerful.A Call to Nigerian Tourism
Beyond aesthetics, Savannah carries a deeper mission which is to spark renewed interest in Nigerian tourism, particularly the North. For Kuku, the collection is not merely inspired by place but advocates for it.“In many ways, Savannah is my way of saying, look again,” she explains. “There is beauty here that deserves to be seen, honoured, and preserved. Fashion can help us tell that story.”In this light, Savannah becomes both mirror and map, reframing Northern Nigeria not as a distant idea, but as a living, breathing destination rich in craft, culture, and ecology. Kuku’s storytelling invites Nigerians to rediscover the splendour within their own borders, to see travel and tourism as acts of appreciation and stewardship. The show’s design echoed this invitation: warm, amber lighting, ambient soundscapes evoked the hush of the northern horizon on a backdrop that had you in the Savannah itself.. Each model’s movement felt like a journey, a pilgrimage toward rediscovery, reminding the audience that the destinations we seek abroad often already exist, waiting, at home.
Sustainability as Soul, Not Strategy
As with her previous collection “Oceans”, sustainability is the heartbeat of Savannah, not as a marketing gesture but as a moral language. The collection extends Kuku’s commitment to designing with mindfulness, ensuring that every fabric, process, and finish reflects thoughtful use of resources and respect for the environment.“The savannah is an ecosystem built on balance,” Kuku reflects. “It teaches us that survival depends on respect, respect for rhythm, rest and renewal. That’s the philosophy behind this collection.”Fabrics were ethically sourced and produced to minimize waste; silhouettes were conceived for longevity rather than trend resulting in clothing that endures, breathes and belongs; fashion not just for the moment, but for meaning.Kuku’s approach reframes sustainability as tenderness, a way of working that values care over consumption. In Savannah, sustainability is not a statement; it is spirit.
A Sensory Experience
The show itself unfolded like a meditation. The set, minimal yet immersive resembled an abstracted desert plain. Lighting shifted from gold to amber, echoing the passage of the northern sun. Percussion and ambient soundscapes filled the air with quiet power.Garments glided through the space, their movement slow and deliberate, their fabrics catching the light as if exhaling warmth. The audience sat in near silence, immersed not in spectacle but in story. When the final look appeared, it felt less like a finale and more like a benediction. Guests rose to their feet not in applause alone but in shared recognition of something intimate.
The Designer’s Reflection
Kuku’s creative journey has always been rooted in texture and truth. Trained at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art, she began her career in textile design, a foundation that shaped her distinctive voice in Nigerian fashion. Over the years, her eponymous label has become synonymous with refined printwork, emotional storytelling, and a quiet defiance of fleeting trends.“Savannah is special to me because it brings everything full circle,” she says. “It’s about remembering where we come from, respecting what we have, and seeing Nigeria as more than just potential. This collection is my love letter, but also my call: to protect our land, to travel through it, to tell its stories beautifully and truthfully.”For Kuku, the collection represents both gratitude and responsibility, a reminder that fashion’s truest power lies in preservation as much as in creation.
A New Vision for Nigerian Fashion
With Savannah, Banke Kuku positions herself as a custodian of consciousness, one using fashion to call for environmental balance, cultural pride, and renewed national attention to the beauty that already surrounds us.Her vision reflects a broader movement within Nigerian fashion: one that fuses craftsmanship with conscience, creativity with citizenship. Savannah reaffirms that African luxury is not only about glamour, but also about grounding. As the lights dimmed and the music faded, it was clear that Savannah had achieved something rare: it left the audience looking inward and homeward at once.
