How to ‘spring clean’ your career

No, we don’t mean with a duster! This sort of cleaning will help you spring ahead in your career.

Whether you’re dreaming of a different job or wanting to grow in your current position, it’s always a good idea to do a complete revamp every now and then. What does this mean exactly? Thinking about your job, your performance and your image and deciding what revamps you could do to further yourself.

Ask yourself “what needs to change?” Is your CV feeling a bit outdated? Have you given up on networking? Do you need to rebrand yourself?

Read through these tips as if you were doing a ‘personal audit’ to see where in your career you could do with some dusting. Once you’ve identified where your clutter is, come up with an action plan on how you’re going to fix the problems. And then DO IT!

Update data

Make sure that all your online profiles are up to date and accurate. This goes for your LinkedIn profile and CV too!

Declutter, reorder, delete

Mercilessly scrutinise your CV. Delete irrelevant computer skills (they’re a total given), remove those student job references, and modernise the layout.

Brag better

If you really want to achieve big, you need a ‘bragalogue’ – a catalogue of achievements for your CV and online profiles. Just be sure it strikes the right tone; you want to sound like it’s ‘unintentional.’

Free up time

Carefully look at how your time is spent and cut out activities that just clutter your day. Establish your priorities, delete distractions, and you’ll find it easy to rework your schedule.

Renew yourself

Put some time and effort into bettering yourself! Nowadays companies are looking for well-rounded employees; so work on a talent, study something new, find a new hobby or do some charity work.

Join the conversation

Being active online and knowing what’s trending will keep you up to date with current affairs. Follow some boundary-pushing, opinionated bloggers – new opinions and perspectives freshen your thinking.

Refocus your finances

Take a serious look at your debit orders, decide what you really need and simplify them. Getting on top of your finances will make you feel like you’re on top of the world.

Re-engage

Contacts are key! Think about your existing ones and rekindle any that you have neglected. Think of new contacts that could help you in your career, and make them happen!

Shape up

Are you in good shape? A healthy diet and regular exercise will not only keep you healthy, but also mentally alert. This will ensure you perform stronger for longer at work.

Brighten up

Feel grey when you wake up on a weekday? Then bring some colour into your life! Inject your wardrobe with a bit of GLAM – looking good makes you feel good.

Negate the negatives

Check up on those activities and people that demotivate you or just cause friction. Are they the problem or is it actually you? If so, consider making some changes in yourself. If it’s them then try and minimise your interaction with them, or just walk away.

Check expiry dates

Had a major fall out with a colleague last year? Be the bigger person and stop nagging over history. Politely distance yourself from past problems. Move on.
