Legendary maskandi duo Shwi noMtekhala set to perform in Cape Town at Frnds of Jazz

Cape Town is set for a standout music event as The Jazz Cult presents Frnds of Jazz, taking place on 30 November at Maynardville in Wynberg. And the buzz just went next level: Shwi noMtekhala, the legendary Maskandi duo, will be performing in the city for the first time in almost twenty years.  Known for bridging generations and genres, the duo brings a sound that is unmistakably South African, rooted in tradition, yet vibrant and contemporary.

Shwi noMtekhala which is composed of Mandla Xaba and Zwelenduna Rodgers Magubane, began their career in the late ’90s and rose to national prominence with the 2005 album Wangisiza Baba. The record sold half a million copies and earned SAMA Awards, cementing their place as one of South Africa’s defining musical acts. With ten albums to their name, their music continues to resonate across age groups and styles, a testament to their enduring appeal.

Their Cape Town performance is made possible by The Jazz Cult, founded by Onesipho Sivuyisiwe Siwisa, a platform that has redefined live music experiences. The space focuses not only on performance but also on building community, preserving culture, and fostering innovation, offering a stage where heritage and contemporary creativity coexist seamlessly.

The event’s lineup is a carefully curated showcase of South African talent. Ndabo Zulu, the KwaZulu-Natal–born trumpeter whose work spans jazz, amapiano, and experimental music, will perform in Cape Town for a rare appearance as well. He will be joined by Siya Makuzeni, Tony Gum, The Jazz Boys, MANA, and more, offering a mix of established and emerging voices. Shwi noMtekhala were announced in phase two of the lineup, emphasizing The Jazz Cult’s commitment to honouring artists whose work has shaped the musical landscape. The event will be family-friendly, so people encouraged to bring children.

With a lineup that spans genres, generations, and cultural influences, the event promises a live music experience that is as innovative as it is rooted in South African heritage.
