The inspirational story of Rands in the heart of Khayelitsha

It was the year 2015, in the heart of Khayelitsha — where rhythm met resilience — that a cultural giant was born. Not in glossy boardrooms or luxury districts, but in the hands of two visionaries, Mfundo and Mshayi Mbeki, who dared to reimagine what groove could be.

What started as a bold idea rooted in township pride has, ten years later, grown into a national symbol of culture, sound, and style. Rands Cape Town now stands tall as one of South Africa’s most iconic cultural landmarks — a temple of music, movement, and the true spirit of ekasi.

This August 31st, Rands marks its milestone tenth birthday with The 10 Groove Commandments — a theme that pays homage to a decade of divine vibes, unforgettable nights, and a movement that’s redefined the pulse of Cape Town nightlife.

From humble beginnings to hosting international DJs and local legends, Rands has always been more than a party. It’s a movement. A safe haven for creatives, tastemakers, and music lovers. A space where food, fashion, and music collide — always authentic, always evolving.

What sets Rands apart is not just its commitment to entertainment, but its unwavering authenticity. In a city often divided by distance and class, Rands has bridged the gap — welcoming everyone to see the vibe, feel the energy, and be part of something real. International DJs, Amapiano pioneers, Afro-house kings and queens, fashion icons, and food lovers alike have all walked through its gates — many returning, again and again, because Rands is home.

But beyond the beats and the bottles, this celebration is a reminder of Rands’ legacy — one built on community, on pushing boundaries, and on setting trends. It is a reminder that the best grooves aren’t imported; they are born in the streets, under the Cape Town sun, and nurtured by the people who believe in something bigger than just a night out.

And while the groove has gone national, even global, the spirit remains local: rooted in community, driven by purpose, and fueled by people who believe in something greater than just a good time.

As the 10 Groove Commandments are revealed — not etched in stone, but in beats, sweat, and style — one thing remains true: Rands isn’t just part of the culture. It is the culture.
