With the current success of The Polygamist, based on a novel by Sue Nyathi, the spotlight is once again on the power of African literature and its ability to captivate audiences far beyond the pages of a book. The series' growing popularity highlights the impact that literary works can have when adapted for screen, bringing beloved characters, compelling storylines and culturally rich narratives to entirely new audiences. From Oscar-winning films to record-breaking streaming hits, Southern African authors have inspired some of the region's most memorable screen productions. Here, we look at the books that made the successful journey from page to screen, proving that great stories can thrive in any format.
Hlomu the Wife
When Showmax announced it was adapting author Dudu Busani-Dube's bestselling Hlomu series, South Africans had plenty to say about the casting. Fortunately, audiences quickly embraced the result. The Wife became one of Showmax's biggest original productions, bringing Hlomu the Wife, Zandile the Resolute and Naledi His Love to life as a gripping telenovela centred on the infamous Zulu brothers. The series stars Mbalenhle Mavimbela as Hlomu and Bonko Khoza as Mqhele, whose passionate and turbulent romance became one of the most talked-about relationships on South African television. The cast also includes Khanyi Mbau, Mondli Makhoba, Gaisang K Noge and Zikhona Sodlaka.
The show's success extended beyond viewership records. The Wife earned 10 SAFTA nominations in 2022 and won SAFTA Golden Horn awards for Best Actor (Bonko Khoza) and Best Supporting Actor (Abdul Khoza). The production later added another SAFTA for Best Achievement in Directing and also received recognition at the DStv Mzansi Viewers' Choice Awards, cementing its status as one of South Africa's most successful literary adaptations.
Love, Sex and 30 Candles
Based on Angela Makholwa's bestselling novel The 30th Candle, the film adaptation was reimagined for the screen as Love, Sex and 30 Candles. Starring Amogelang Chidi, Gabisile Tshabalala, Candice Modiselle and Bahumi Madisakwane, the story follows four lifelong friends as they navigate love, ambition, heartbreak and the realities of turning 30. The film was nominated for a South African Film and Television Awards and went on to win two National Film & TV Awards South Africa awards for Best Director and Best Actress, further cementing its success as a standout local adaptation.
Tsotsi
Long before South African stories became regular fixtures on streaming platforms, Tsotsi put local filmmaking on the world stage. Based on the novel by Athol Fugard, the 2005 film adaptation was directed by Gavin Hood and starred the late Presley Chweneyagae as a young Johannesburg gangster whose life changes after discovering a baby in a stolen car. The cast also featured Terry Pheto and Mothusi Magano.
The film made history when it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards, becoming the first South African film to win an Oscar.
Its success didn't stop there. Tsotsi collected more than 20 international awards, including the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the AFI Fest, the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film and the Standard Life Audience Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, as well as honours at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and Sithengi Cape Town World Cinema Festival.
More than two decades later, Tsotsi remains one of South Africa's most celebrated films, with Chweneyagae's powerful performance widely regarded as one of the finest in the country's cinematic history.
