In celebration of strong, independent, fearless women: Meet Nontando Molefe

Renowned founder of Phatsima Designs, Nontando Molefe was inspired by her passion for African luxury and design to start her own business. The lack of representation in the industry further affirmed her decision. Here, she shares her approach to being a trailblazer.

Her approach to jewellery design has not only earned her numerous accolades but has also captured the attention of diamond lovers and manufacturers across the globe. Her success also speaks to her creativity, and passion for fine art.

Glamour: Please tell us briefly about your entrepreneurial journey?

Nontando: After graduating at the University of Johannesburg where I studied Jewellery design and manufacturing, I worked for a few high-end brands in the industry while studying business management. Getting to learn the corporate and retail side of the jewellery industry, I realised that most of the jewellery sold in South Africa is imported and not manufactured locally. And that there were no black women making a big mark in the jewellery industry for Luxury products, manufacturing and design. This inspired me to start my own business. So, I started saving, writing my business plan and purchasing equipment. When I was ready to start trading the customers came magically without me marketing the business. That is when I knew I was on the right path. I started at a micro small scale doing all the manufacturing myself which I don’t advise… by the way because it’s better to focus on the business side and plan in such a way that the company can run on its own without you present. This was a lesson learned after 2 years of trading and realizing that working like that limits the business growth. I had small resources and finances, so I chose to ensure that each client is happy with their order and that my packaging is of high Luxury standard. Each client was and still is an ambassador for us and that is how we grew, through word of mouth. Before I knew it we were getting interviews with popular media houses across platforms, and touring the world showcasing our collection. Throughout the 11 years of trading, we have invested our profits back into the business and established a team. I am grateful and honored of how far Phatsima Jewellery designs has come and look forward to all the amazing things and growth to come.

Glamour: What's your definition of a fearless female?

Nontando: A female who stands her ground in her beliefs and goals. A female who sees herself as the Queen, goes for her dreams without fear and not letting anyone or anything dim her light.

Glamour: What's your approach to impact and taking up space?

Nontando: Showing up and doing what needs to be done with integrity, honesty, respect, pride, passion and love. Sicking to that will automatically make an impact. Wherever I am, I believe that that place is special. I take up space by being peaceful and making a difference wherever I am by spreading love and kindness to those around me.

Glamour: Which women are on your radar at the moment and why?

Nontando: Mrs Basetsana Kumalo, Mrs Yvonne Chakachaka Mhinga, Mrs Yandi Ntshona Ramohai, Mrs Sassy Jones and Mrs Happy Zulu. All these women, I look up to because they have made a mark in their industry and they are respected successful women in corporate and in business. They are humble, strong willed, comfortable in their own skin, the values they stand for and great ankers in their families. I admire how they have managed to be so successful in their respective carriers while also holding everything down at home with kids and family.

Glamour: How do you ensure that your mental health is intact while navigating your different roles?

Nontando: I very quickly reject any negativity as I don’t want it in my space, in my life and in my business. I try to always have peace in my heart and in my mind. I do this by praying every morning and evening. Exercising for my mental and physical health. Every morning after praying I do “ I am” affirmations before I sleep. I reflect back and think of all the good things that happened in my day and what I am grateful for. This helps to keep my head clear despite any challenges that might pop up which I have no control over. Throughout the years I have learned that being in a positive mindset, showing gratitude to what you have and to those around you that appreciate you is important. That is how you attract good things and blessings. Being a mother of 2, being open for help from family and friends now and then is also good.

Glamour: What's your advice to women who would like to pursue entrepreneurship but are maybe scared to take the leap of faith?

Nontando: We live in a time where being an entrepreneur is supported and encouraged. This is the best time to start a business. We need more jobs created in South Africa so go for it. How-ever… do extensive research, save money, and do a full business plan first. This helps you plan and structure how your business will run and it will give you a clear picture of what needs to be done and how it will be done. No one else can do this for you. Remember it’s your idea. You can then get a professional to clean it up and fine tune it, if need be. Go for your goals and don’t be scared. If you are in corporate or employed, try to start a business while working, that is if what you want to do is not a conflict of interest to where you are working. This will help you work on your business and build a team instead of working IN your business from the beginning. I say this because it is a mistake that a lot of people make and end up being self-employed instead of being entrepreneurs. Remember to PLAN because if you fail to plan then your plan will fail. Believe in yourself and take it one day at a time.
