The Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Awards has once again proven to be a pivotal turning point in the lives of its former students, as they embark on successful careers in the fashion industry. This prestigious award has served as a catalyst, propelling these talented individuals towards remarkable achievements.

One such shining star is Ismael Mchunu, the winner of last year’s Young Designer Award attributes his victory to his willingness to take risks. The accompanying R50,000.00 bursary he won provided him with the motivation to complete his studies this year. Reflecting on his triumph, Mchunu expressed his gratitude, stating, "Receiving the bursary prize last year was an incredible blessing. The financial support enabled me to pursue my studies, especially during the challenging registration period at the beginning of the year. I am sincerely grateful to Hollywoodbets for making my journey easier.”

In addition to the bursary, Mchunu was given the opportunity to attend SA Fashion Week this year, where he met renowned designers, brands and sponsorship companies. This experience has fueled his determination to work diligently and complete his studies, while also expanding his network within the industry. Last year’s recognition as the best young designer has brought Mchunu wider exposure and elevated his brand's profile. He describes winning the competition as a transformative experience that has propelled his career forward.

Similarly, second runner-up Slindile Ndlovu experienced the life-changing impact of winning the R30,000.00 bursary prize from Hollywoodbets. Winning the award not only supported her studies but also opened doors to new job opportunities. Ndlovu recalls, "My win inspired me to have confidence in my abilities and pursue a successful career. People started believing in me and becoming my customers.”

Nhlanhla Dlamini, the third runner-up, received a bursary prize of R20,000.00, which alleviated her financial burden and enabled her to settle outstanding university fees. Winning the competition also brought significant awareness to her brand, garnering attention from various individuals and small businesses. Dlamini remarks, "The competition has allowed more people to recognise my talent and understand what I bring to the table.”

As the 2023 Young Designer Award approaches, former winners share their advice for aspiring participants. Ismael Mchunu encourages entrants to plan ahead, conduct thorough research and have confidence in their designs. He advises, "Think out of this world and create something extraordinary. Embrace maximalism and let your imagination soar beyond the boundaries of traditional fashion.
