The low-down on bridal corsets

Ever since Kim Kardashian posted a pic of herself wearing a waist-training corset to Instagram, a cinching renaissance erupted across the Internet – and much of the world. Whether it was for weight-loss, perfect posture or to stun on their wedding day, women everywhere wanted to get in on the corset trend. And what’s not to love about a figure-shaping, smooth-silhouette-making corset? GLAMOUR reached out to corsetry specialist Anya Kovacs of The Velvet Letter for an insider’s look at the art of corsetry.

Why should a woman consider corsetry for her big day?

Corsets are great for streamlining your torso. Even if you don’t wear a corset with a big waist reduction, the corset will smooth out all your lumps and bumps, giving you a more dramatic silhouette. Corsets also provide the best bust support, especially if you’re wearing a strapless gown!

What other options do brides have if they don’t want a visible corset on their gown?

Historically, corsets were worn as foundation garments, just like we wear bras today. At The Velvet Letter, I make classic foundation corsets that will enhance your figure and can be worn under any outfit – from your wedding dress to your workplace uniform.

Do certain corsets offer more tightening or a thinning effect in the waist and hips when compared to others?

Corsets are really complex garments and the fit is crucial, so steer clear of flimsy, mass-produced corsets! Since each body is unique, you will always get the best results by wearing a made-to-measure corset, but if you don’t have the budget for bespoke, try purchasing a standard-sized corset that is made by a specialist.

How tightly do you recommend a corset be laced?

How tightly you lace your corset will depend on how your body is feeling, on the shape of the corset and how “seasoned” it is as corsets mould to your body over time. Trust your instincts – if it feels too tight, then loosen the laces a little and allow your body time to acclimatise.

Are corsets a viable weight-loss measure?

You might eat less while you’re wearing a corset because it is a firm control garment, but the garment itself won’t make you lose weight.

Is waist training and corsetry related?

Only slightly. Waist training refers to a form of body modification achieved by wearing a series of progressively smaller corsets to mould the torso. This takes serious dedication as you need to wear the corset for a minimum of eight hours a day, and you need to invest in quality made-to-measure corsets. The elasticated waist trainers currently in fashion are a gimmick.

Are there any health concerns with wearing a corset?

Most healthy people won’t have any problems wearing a corset but there are certain medical conditions that can be exacerbated by wearing one. If you have any specific concerns, do check with your doctor whether wearing a corset could inflame your problem.

What types of corsets are recommended for brides?

Bridal corsets need to be compatible with the dress being worn, so check that your corset doesn’t peep out from under the dress and that it is in a colour that’s not visible through the dress. If possible, take your corset along to dress fittings so you can try on your dress over the corset.

What materials do you use to construct your corsets and are some materials better to use than others?

Corsets can be made from a variety of materials, depending on the intended purpose and preferences of both the wearer and maker. I usually work with 100% cotton English coutil fabric or a sheer polyester mesh, either of which can be combined with silk or lace. The metal components, such as the boning, are all made from high-quality German steel.

What is the lifespan of a corset?

Corsets wear out faster the more you wear them, so it’s tricky to give an accurate lifespan. Most people who wear a corset occasionally will easily get four to five years of wear out of a well-made corset.

How would you go about cleaning a corset?

Use a corset liner if you wear your corset often as this protects it from your skin’s natural oils. After wearing your corset, drape it over a chair to air overnight then roll it up and store in a lingerie bag or clean pillowcase. Corsets can be drycleaned or spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap, but if they are aired often, they won’t need a lot of washing. Always test delicate fabrics before washing!

What led you to this type of work?

I’ve always loved lingerie so when I decided to start my own business, it seemed obvious to find a niche in the lingerie world. Corsets are the ultimate lingerie item and there are very few corsetiers in South Africa.

What are three essential undergarments every woman should have in her lingerie drawer?

1 A pair of knickers that makes you feel invincible – wearing great pants makes me feel like I can take over the world.

2 A well-fitting bra, which can be expensive, but is worthwhile in the long run.

3 A beautiful corset – because they are the ultimate lingerie item and they enhance your natural shape for knockout curves under your little black dress.
