Getting your lashes done for the first time? Here's what you need to know

Beauty treatments can be a bit intimidating if you’re not a regular, from waxing to lash lifts - there is a lot to choose from in the beauty sphere. If you’ve been thinking about getting lash extensions for the first time, there are some things to note before you head over to your appointment. Come prepared to get the absolute best results for your lashes.

First up, do your research

It’s important to check out social media accounts to get an idea of the lashes you would like and bring that to your appointment. Owner of Alternative Aesthetics and Cape Town-based lash tech, Carla Peake shares some insight around this and shares, ‘I recommend clients know what their desired outcome is. Clients who come with references and additional pictures help us get a clear idea of their expectations.’

Having an idea of what you like, can also help in managing your expectations. Carla outline, ‘Even with references, there are some lash styles that aren’t suited for all eye shapes. A good lash tech will communicate this and offer alternative options to get close to the desired result.’

First and foremost, keeping your lashes healthy is the most important thing. As Carla explains, ‘As lash technicians, ethically we put the health of a client’s lashes first. Just because you want a certain set, doesn’t always mean your lashes can handle said set’

What not to do

It’s important to come into the appointment with relatively clean lashes. That means, no mascara or additional debris around your eyes. Don’t forget to let your tech know if you’re wearing contact lenses as it can be compromised in the session. Carla shares, ‘Some clients eyes don’t close completely, and the fumes from lash glue can actually melt the lenses itself.’

How to keep your lashes looking good?

It’s important to have a set cleansing routine to ensure lashes look good for as long possible. Carla mentions, ‘The best and easiest way to have longevity is to listen to your lash tech! Don’t pick at them, wash them regularly and avoid oil based products around the lashes.’
