Choosing a wig’s daunting enough without having to consider how you’ll look after it. Here are Fascination Hair’s tips for taking care of and grooming wigs made of a variety of hair types.
Synthetic fibre
1 Always use products a wig boutique recommends, because they’ve been tried-and-tested and specially formulated for your wig type.
2 Wash your wig in cold water.
3 Don’t rub the fibres when washing. instead, gently run your fingers through them.
4 Be careful when you’re cleaning the inside of the wig-cap section as that’s where the oil of your scalp sits.
5 Once you’ve finished washing your wig, wrap it in a towel, but don’t wring out excess water.
6 Gently shake out your wig and leave it to dry naturally overnight on a wig stand. if you don’t own a wig stand, look for something wig-shaped that you can hang it on such as a vase.
7 Never use a curling-or flatiron on a synthetic wig
HEAT DEFIANT
Heat defiant wigs are similar to synthetic wigs the only difference being that you can use heat on the hair once it’s dry.
When your wig’s bone dry, you can use a curling tong or flatiron to style it, but the heat mustn’t exceed 170°c.
Always use a wide-tooth comb when styling as brushes and fine-tooth combs tend to stretch out the fibres and leave the hair looking matted and frizzy.
If the ends start to frizz, apply a thermal protector and flatiron until smooth.
Remember: heat-friendly fibres don’t react to water, so once you’ve curled it, the style will stay in, unless you apply heat to straighten it.
HUMAN HAIR
1 Wigs react to moisture and the weather as your natural hair does, so you must style them after every wash or whenever they’ve been in contact with moisture.
2 Wash your wig in lukewarm water. Gently run your fingers through it.
3 Condition the hair from mid-length to end, then rinse it well. For the best result, leave a moisturising mask on for 30 minutes before you rinse.
4 Dry the inside of the cap on medium heat until it’s mostly dry.
5 Secure the velvet part of the wig at the temple, ear tabs and nape, to a canvas block head using t-pins, but avoid the delicate smart lace and hand-tied cap.
6 Use a hairdryer until it’s 90% dry
7 Add a thermal protector or blow- dry balm and, using a natural, round boar- bristle brush, blow-dry the hair in small sections, from the nape upward.
8 Use a flatiron or curling tong to create your desired style and smooth out the ends
9 Human hair wigs words, they don’t receive nourishment from a scalp. so your human- hair wig needs extra love and care – masks, hot-oil treatments and serums – to keep its hair looking shiny and beautiful for as long as possible.
