Square-Tip Nails Are Trending – Here’s Some Inspiration

The ’90s and Noughties have been big topics of conversation in the last couple of years. A treasure trove of fashion and beauty trends, the latest to emerge are square-shaped nails. “Square nails are a huge trend at the moment,” says manicurist to the stars, Michelle Humphrey. “The ’00s are back, with brands like Miu Miu and Blumarine bringing back nostalgic fashion, so of course nail trends follow suit.”

Beloved by everyone from Dua Lipa to Kylie Jenner, square nails can be striking and bold, or minimalistic and low-maintenance – whatever your preference, there is a style for you. All that’s required is to create a squared-off tip, whether you do that yourself or ask your manicurist to work their magic. “The square shape suits any length of nail – but at the moment, medium to longer lengths are trending,” adds Humphrey.

Her creations are all the proof needed that this trend works well with vibrant patterns, colours and cute motifs, as well as the French manicure, which has fast become a key look this year. “Square French nails are super cool with a bright white tip, and it also works for the American mani, where the white tip is softer and more natural looking,” she says, adding that designs, dots, shimmery sheer shades and silver glitter lines also work well. “Whatever you do, it’s all about tapping into the nostalgia of the Noughties.”

Square tips work best on stronger nails, as square shapes can break easily. And Humphrey advises that those with longer talons should make use of a strong formula, like acrylic, hard gel or Polygel. “There’s also the Gel X system, a gel press-on nail, that offers many square lengths and shapes,” says Humphrey. Her last piece of advice? “Keep edges sharp by carrying a nail file at all times.”
