BET Awards Nominations: Tyla, Tems, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Asake fly Africa’s flag in global categories

The 2026 BET Awards nominations have officially been announced and, notably, there is no Africa-specific or Internatinal category this year - a move many across the continent have long advocated for.

For years, conversations around African music recognition have centred on integration rather than separation, with many arguing that African artists have outgrown being confined to regional categories and are more than capable of competing on the global stage.

This year’s nominations appear to reflect that shift. African stars are not standing on the sidelines; they are competing directly alongside some of the world’s biggest names across major categories, signalling another milestone for the global rise of Afrobeats, Amapiano and African music in general.

Leading Africa’s representation is Tems, who secured three nominations, making her the continent’s most nominated artist this year. She earned nods for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, BET Her Award for First, and Viewer’s Choice Award for Raindance with Dave.

South Africa’s Tyla continues her global ascent with two major nominations for her hit single Chanel. The singer earned nods in both the prestigious Video of the Year and Viewer’s Choice Award categories, marking another milestone in African artists competing directly within mainstream global categories.

Nigeria’s Afrobeats giants also made the list. Wizkid and Asake received a joint nomination in the Best Group category, while Burna Boy landed a nomination for Best Collaboration for WGFT with Gunna.

The absence of a dedicated African category may spark debate, but it also marks a symbolic moment: African artists are increasingly being positioned not as international additions, but as global contenders in their own right. For an industry that has spent years pushing for equal footing, the 2026 nominations feel less like inclusion and more like recognition
