Africa Month Spotlight: Celebrating African artistic excellence with BET awards recognition

Launched in 2001, the BET Awards were created to honour Black excellence across the entertainment industry, encompassing music, film, philanthropy, and more. These awards aim to spotlight Black individuals whose exceptional talent and impact often go unrecognised by mainstream platforms ,  individuals who, despite being marginalised or overlooked, continue to exceed expectations and shape culture on a global scale.

In recent years, the BET Awards have expanded their commitment to inclusivity by embracing the broader African diaspora. This includes giving well-deserved recognition to artists across the African continent, from countries such as South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and Eswatini. African artists are no longer only featured in niche or regional categories, they are now competing alongside celebrated American performers in major award categories, reflecting a growing acknowledgement of Africa's global cultural influence.

In celebration of Africa Month, we turn the spotlight on some of the continent’s most exciting musical talents who have earned nominations at this year’s BET Awards. Among them is South Africa’s Maglera Doe Boy, one of the country’s fastest-rising rap stars, known for his lyrical depth and bold artistry. Also making waves is Ghana’s Black Sherif, whose unique sound and emotional storytelling have positioned him as one of West Africa’s brightest young voices.

As we mark this month of African pride and heritage, these nominations serve not only as personal milestones for the artists but also as a powerful statement: African excellence deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated on the world stage.
