Africa Month Spotlight: David Tlale transforms Gautrain Sandton station with AW26/27 “I Am Africa, Not African” showcase

Africa Month 2026 took on a bold new dimension as celebrated South African designer David Tlale staged his Autumn/Winter 2026/27 collection at the Gautrain Sandton Station, turning one of the country’s busiest transport hubs into a high-fashion spectacle.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Gautrain’s Art in Transit initiative and the internationally acclaimed designer, commuters and guests were treated to an immersive runway experience that unfolded across platforms, train carriages, and station corridors. The activation reimagined public transport as a living, moving catwalk, blurring the lines between fashion, movement, and everyday urban life.

Tlale’s collection, titled “I Am Africa, Not African,” was unveiled as part of Africa Month celebrations, anchoring the show in a powerful narrative of identity, heritage, and self-definition.

Speaking about the concept, Tlale described the showcase as a long-held vision rooted in “excellence, innovation and national pride,” adding that the collaboration symbolised a meeting point between creativity and public space, where fashion becomes part of daily life rather than a distant spectacle.

The collection itself reflected Tlale’s signature codes, structured tailoring, expressive textures, and a blend of heritage references with modern luxury, reinforcing his ongoing commitment to telling African stories through contemporary design.

The Sandton Gautrain Station became the centre piece of the experience, with models moving through the station and onto platforms as passengers watched fashion unfold in real time.

The show formed part of Gautrain’s broader Art in Transit programme, which aims to transform stations into cultural and creative spaces that celebrate South African storytelling and artistic expression.

Among the notable appearances on the runway was media personality and entrepreneur Sonia Booth, who walked as part of the show’s model cast. Her presence added star power to a collection already defined by its blend of fashion industry veterans and cultural figures.

Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe described the collaboration as part of a broader vision to make public transport a platform for creativity, identity, and shared cultural experience.

The initiative positions Gautrain not just as a transport system, but as a cultural destination — one where art, movement, and everyday life intersect in unexpected ways.

With “I Am Africa, Not African”, David Tlale once again reinforced his reputation for staging fashion in unconventional spaces,  from bridges to stations —while continuing to challenge how African luxury is experienced and defined.

The AW26/27 showcase at Sandton stands as one of his most immersive productions yet: a reminder that for Tlale, fashion is not confined to runways, but exists in the rhythm of the city itself.
