So, what really happens at a Fashion Week? Our Junior Fashion Editor Lori Herbert gives us a peak into #MBFWJ (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg). Here’s her diary of her favourite shows from the weekend.
Thursday 5th March
Melrose Arch was buzzing as fashion week kicked off. It started with a beautiful bang as Khosi Nkosi and Tsotetsi KL opened the shows. Blue was the theme for the talented Tsotetsi KL, mixing various textures and fabrics in the gorgeous colour palate. Marianne Fassler stole the day with her distressed and deconstructed denim pieces and gorgeous frocks showing us exactly why she continues to be one of our top South African designers. Another highlight was Stefania Morland, who continued her signature style with beautiful detailing and embellishments.
Friday 6th March
Friday was filled with excitement as Gavin Rajah kicked the day off with his resort collection. The runway started with big hats and bathing suits, gorgeous boho feel pieces and then closed with the ultra glam dresses that pay homage to the feminine form. Grapevine gave a nod to the past with retro feel, fun and flirty pieces and Leigh Schubert filled the runway with digi-print, sheer pieces and fab tassels. Another highlight of the day was the AFI Next Generation show held at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. AKEDO was inventive, LAND had grievous oversized pieces and Rich Mnisi took layering to a new level.
Saturday 7th March
David Tlale showed us why he’s the king of South African fashion as he started the day with his amazing off site show. Beautifully tailored pieces, prints and gorgeous frocks made it a stand out show. Selfi was a runway dominated with amazing prints, and Shana showed us designing is definitely in her genes with rich colours and beautiful detailing. The Suzaan Heyns show was filled with dramatic pieces, beautiful outerwear and amazing details. Her clothing moved beautifully on the runway and her bridal inspired look that closed the show was phenomenal.
