A Toast to Terroir – Steenberg Farm celebrates Sauvignon Blanc Month

This May, Steenberg Farm in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley invites guests to savour the essence of its celebrated terroir as it raises a glass to Sauvignon Blanc Month. With curated pairings, sharing menus, and a spotlight on South Africa’s signature varietal, Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin and her team at Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82 offer food and wine lovers an experience not to be missed

“Sauvignon Blanc is at the heart of who we are,” says Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin. “Our cool climate and distinctive terroir produce crisp, elegant wines that are unmistakably Steenberg. We are proud to be regarded as one of South Africa’s leading producers of world-class Sauvignon Blanc – a varietal we’ve championed and refined over decades and vintages.”

This deep connection to place and varietal inspired Steenberg’s Sauvignon Blanc Month celebrations, running from 1 to 31 May (including International Sauvignon Blanc Day on 2 May) with specially curated menus at both Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82.

At Tryn, guests can indulge in a thoughtfully paired four-course menu, followed by its signature Chocolate Truffle, which showcases the versatility and elegance of Steenberg’s Sauvignon Blanc portfolio.

  1. Masala Dusted Calamari, paired with Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2024The dish opens with a lively blend of spice, citrus and texture. “The vinaigrette and creamy yuzu emulsion bring out the wine’s zesty acidity and tropical fruit notes,” explains Kilpin.
  2. Steak Tartare, paired with Steenberg Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2023This course leans into richness, offset by the depth of the barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. “There’s a beautiful play between the creamy tartare and the wine’s subtle oak and savoury character,” says Kilpin.
  3. Veal Escalope, paired with Steenberg The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2024This elegant dish complements the flagship Sauvignon Blanc with preserved lemon, arancini, and an artichoke velouté. “The Black Swan’s complexity shines with this course,” Kilpin adds.
  4. Lime Cremeux, paired with Steenberg Sparkling Sauvignon BlancA bright, textural dessert of citrus and berry notes is the perfect end to the meal. “It’s fresh, effervescent, and celebratory – everything Sauvignon Blanc should be.”

Meanwhile, Bistro Sixteen82 celebrates the social side of Sauvignon Blanc with a menu of five flavour-filled sharing plates, designed to pair perfectly with a bottle of Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2024.

From the vibrant Fish Tartare made with sustainable Abalobi fish, to Mushroom Carpaccio with

sticky rice, crispy wakame, parmesan, miso mayo and porcini soil – each dish is carefully curated to bring out the wine’s crisp, layered character.

Other highlights include:

  • Wasabi Dusted Baby Patagonian Calamari with avo pulp, basil, tamarind vinaigrette, and oi mouchin emulsion.
  • Crispy Baked Brie with popping candy, goat’s cheese mousse, grape gel, verjuice syrup and macadamia nuts.
  • Pork Pot Stickers with red cabbage and mangetout salsa, a ginger-soy vinaigrette, sesame notes and aioli.

“The menu is playful and full of flavour,” says Kilpin. “It ties in perfectly with Bistro Sixteen82’s relaxed and vibrant atmosphere – about great food, wine, and connection.”

Whether guests opt for the elegant experience at Tryn or the sociable spread at Bistro Sixteen82, the goal remains the same – to deepen their appreciation for Sauvignon Blanc.

"We want people to discover how this varietal can elevate food, reflect its origins, and surprise with its range,” Kilpin shares. “It’s a celebration of flavour, heritage, and the joy of good company.”

With its roots firmly in the cool soils of Constantia, Steenberg’s Sauvignon Blanc Month is a toast to South African excellence – and possibly the beginning of a new annual tradition.
