Nostalgic or lazy? Social media and celebs react to Justin Bieber's Coachella performance

Justin Bieber’s Coachella set this year wasn’t just a performance, it was a conversation starter. It wasn’t the big, high-energy comeback moment many festival-goers were expecting. And depending on who you ask, it was either genius or completely underwhelming.

From the start, the set didn’t follow the usual Coachella formula. There were no over-the-top visuals or heavy choreography. It was just Bieber on stage, keeping things minimal. At times, it almost felt like you were watching him in a more intimate setting rather than at one of the biggest music festivals in the world.

What really had the internet talking was the moment he started playing old YouTube clips of himself. Instead of performing every song live, he leaned into those early videos and sang along to them. For some fans, it felt nostalgic. It was a full-circle moment, especially considering how his career started. Seeing him revisit that era on such a massive stage felt intentional, like he was reflecting on his journey.  After all, Bieber is one of the few artists whose entire career is rooted in YouTube discovery.

But not everyone was impressed.

Social media reactions were split almost instantly. Critics called the set low-energy and questioned whether it felt more like karaoke than a headline performance. Some expected a grand comeback moment, considering this marked one of Bieber’s first major performances in years. Instead, what they got was something casual.

A few celebrities weighed in on Bieber's performance with reactions just as mixed as everyone else's.

Katy Perry it light and playful. While posting from the festival, she joked about Bieber playing YouTube videos during his set, saying she was just glad he had YouTube premium so there were no ads. It was playful, but subtly pointed out the unusual moment.

Zara Larsson, who received backlash for her reaction, posted a TikTok of her watching the performance and wrote "It's giving let's smoke and watch YouTube." She even joked that Bieber would be part of her “dream blunt rotation,” which sums up how chaotic but entertaining the set felt.

Diplo defended Bieber by describing the set as feeling like being at a party with him, suggesting that people may have misunderstood the intention behind it. According to him, it wasn’t meant to be a big spectacle but more of a vibe.
