By pairing advanced dermatological science with pure serum pleasure, protecting your skin no longer feels like a chore, but the highlight of your daily beauty routine. Business Unit Head at Beiersdorf, Anisa Ramdass lets us into the future of daily SPF...

GLAMOUR: Why is daily SPF important even on days when we’re mostly indoors or when the weather is cloudy, and what long-term skin damage can regular sun exposure cause?

Anisa: Daily sun protection is important because UV exposure isn’t limited to hot, sunny days or beach holidays. UVA rays can pass through clouds and glass, and we can be exposed during everyday activities like commuting, walking outside or sitting near windows.

Over time, repeated UV exposure can contribute to visible signs of skin ageing, such as fine lines, loss of firmness and uneven pigmentation. It can also contribute to long-term skin damage. That’s why dermatologists and skincare experts see SPF as part of your everyday skincare routine, rather than something you only reach for when you’re going to the beach.

GLAMOUR: There are many misconceptions around SPF, including the belief that people with darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen. What are the biggest SPF myths you encounter, and what should consumers know?

Anisa: One of the biggest myths is that darker skin doesn’t need sun protection. Melanin does provide some natural protection, but it does not make the skin immune to UV damage. UV exposure can still contribute to pigmentation, premature skin ageing and other forms of skin damage.

Another misconception is that sunscreen is only necessary in summer or on sunny days. UV exposure happens throughout the year, so daily protection is a much better approach.

And finally, SPF isn’t just about preventing sunburn. Sun protection is also about helping to protect the skin from the longer-term effects of repeated UV exposure.

GLAMOUR: What should people look for when choosing a sunscreen, particularly in terms of SPF level, broad-spectrum protection and reapplication, and how can they incorporate it properly into their daily skincare routine?

Anisa: For everyday use, always look for a high SPF, ideally SPF 50+, together with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. The sunscreen should also be something you actually enjoy using and applying, because consistency is what matters.

Apply it as the final step of your morning skincare routine, before makeup if you wear it. And remember that sunscreen isn’t a once-a-day product if you are spending extended time outdoors. Reapply regularly, particularly after sweating, swimming or towel-drying. The best sunscreen is ultimately the one that gives you will use consistently.

GLAMOUR: Eucerintalks a lot about “Advanced Spectral Technology.” Can you break down in simple terms how it protects skin differently from regular sunscreen?

Anisa: Think of sunlight as more than just the rays that cause sunburn. Sunlight contains different types of radiation or ultra-violet light that can affect the skin in different ways.

Eucerin’s Advanced Spectral Technology combines broad-spectrum UVA and UVB filters with ingredients that help protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by UV and high-energy visible light. So, it’s about looking at the broader effects of sunlight on the skin, not just preventing sunburn.

GLAMOUR: How does UV damage contribute to issues beyond sunburn — like pigmentation, early ageing, and sensitive skin?

Anisa: Sunburn is just one of the ways UV exposure can affect the skin. Repeated UV exposure can trigger processes (like melanin over-production) in the skin that contribute to dark marks or hyperpigmentation. UV damage also impacts collagen productions that is responsible for keeping skin looking firm and youthful.

This is why someone may not burn easily but can still experience visible effects of cumulative sun exposure, such as uneven pigmentation, fine lines and premature ageing.

GLAMOUR: Why is daily sun protection still important even when it’s cloudy or we’re indoors near windows?

Anisa: Cloudy weather doesn’t mean there is no UV exposure. UVA rays can pass through clouds and glass, and we are exposed to UV as part of everyday life  - not only when we are deliberately spending time in the sun.

Of course, if you're indoors all day and away from windows, your exposure will generally be much lower. But for most people, making SPF part of their morning routine is an easy way to make sun protection consistent rather than something they have to think about every time they leave the house.

GLAMOUR: What’s your “dermatologist rule” for how much sunscreen to apply and how often to reapply during the day?

Anisa: My simple rule is: don’t be too sparing with sunscreen.

For the face, neck and exposed areas, you need enough product to create the level of protection indicated on the packaging. A useful consumer guide is the two-finger rule -  applying a line of sunscreen along two fingers for the face and neck.

As for reapplication, if you're outdoors for an extended period, reapply about every two hours and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying. If you're indoors all day, you don't necessarily need to keep reapplying every two hours.

GLAMOUR: If someone can only do ONE thing for their skin in 2026, why should it be daily?

Anisa: If I could choose just one habit, it would be daily sun protection. You can have an excellent skincare routine, but if you're not protecting your skin from UV exposure every day, you're not addressing one of the biggest environmental factors contributing to premature skin ageing and hyperpigmentation. And the best part is that it doesn't have to be complicated  - make SPF the last step of your morning skincare routine and make it a habit.

GLAMOUR: What’s the one sun protection myth you wish you could debunk for everyone here today?

Anisa: That sunscreen is only for sunny days or beach days.

Sun protection should be part of your everyday routine. We don't only experience UV exposure when we're lying on the beach - it's part of everyday life. So rather than thinking, “Am I going to be in the sun today?”, I would make it simpler: SPF every morning.

GLAMOUR: What is the best way to reduce the 'chalky' white look of an SPF? Is it ingredients or simply waiting for it to settle?

Anisa: Both the formulation and the way you apply a sunscreen can make a difference. The white or chalky appearance is often more noticeable with certain UV filters and formulations, particularly in darker skin tones.

Modern sunscreen formulations have come a long way, with more elegant textures and formulations designed to blend more easily into the skin. Applying the product evenly and allowing it a little time to settle can also help.

Ultimately, Eucerin will encourage consumers to choose a sunscreen with a texture and finish that works for their skin tone and skin type like the new Eucerin SPF50+ UV Sunscreen Serum. If you don't enjoy the way a sunscreen feels or looks, you're much less likely to use it every day - and consistency is key.
