Once a learner who struggled academically and failed matric three times, Smith transformed her challenges into a purpose-driven mission to help others succeed. Today, she is the founder of Kim Tuition, an educational initiative that has achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate over the past four years.

Known affectionately as "The Magic Tutor," Smith has dedicated her life to creating opportunities for learners who need encouragement, guidance, and someone who believes in their potential. Through Kim Tuition, she is not only improving academic outcomes but also shaping resilient, confident young leaders who are pursuing their dreams at universities, colleges, and beyond.

Kimberly Smith

GLAMOUR: Please tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start Kim Tuition.

Kimberly: My journey into education was born from my own struggles. Growing up, I was a slow learner and I failed matric three times. Although those experiences were painful, they taught me perseverance and compassion for learners who need extra support. While trying to improve my own understanding, I discovered that one of the best ways to learn is to teach someone else. What started as helping others soon became a passion, and eventually Kim Tuition was born. Through teaching, I became known as “The Magic Tutor.”

For the past four years, Kim Tuition has maintained a 100% pass rate, with many of our learners progressing to universities and colleges. Seeing my learners succeed is one of the greatest joys of my life.

My story is proof that a dream delayed is not a dream denied. I believe our setbacks do not define us, and with determination, faith, and the right support, anything is possible.

GLAMOUR: What gap in the community did you identify that led to the creation of this initiative?

Kimberly: I identified that many learners lacked access to affordable academic support and mentorship. Some simply needed someone to believe in them and guide them patiently. Kim Tuition was created to bridge that gap and provide learners with the support, encouragement, and confidence they need to succeed.

GLAMOUR: How does Kim Tuition support learners beyond improving their academic results?

Kimberly: At Kim Tuition, we believe success goes beyond marks. We focus on building confidence, discipline, resilience, and a growth mindset. We mentor and encourage our learners, helping them develop life skills and believe in their own potential.

GLAMOUR: Why do you believe education and mentorship are especially important for young people today?

Kimberly: Education opens doors and creates opportunities, while mentorship provides guidance and hope. Many young people face uncertainty and pressure, and having someone who believes in them can make all the difference. Together, education and mentorship empower young people to become positive contributors to society.

GLAMOUR: What are some of the biggest challenges learners in your community face, and how does Kim Tuition help address them?

Kimberly: Many learners struggle with limited resources, lack of academic support, low self-esteem, and difficult circumstances. At Kim Tuition, we provide a positive and encouraging environment where learners feel seen, supported, and capable of succeeding. We help them strengthen their understanding while building confidence and perseverance.

GLAMOUR: Can you share a success story of a learner whose life has been positively impacted by your programme?

Kimberly: One of my greatest joys has been seeing learners who once doubted themselves grow into confident young people who excel academically. Many of our learners have gone on to universities and colleges, and watching them pursue their dreams reminds me why I started Kim Tuition. Their success stories inspire me every day.

GLAMOUR: How does your organisation help young people build confidence and believe in their potential?

Kimberly: We create an environment where every learner feels valued and encouraged. By celebrating small victories, offering consistent support, and reminding learners that mistakes are part of growth, we help them develop confidence in their abilities. We encourage them to dream big and believe that they are capable of achieving great things.

GLAMOUR: Youth Month celebrates the role of young people in shaping the future. What message would you like to share with the youth of South Africa?

Kimberly: I want young people to know that your dreams are valid and your potential is limitless. Do not allow your circumstances or setbacks to define you. A dream delayed is not a dream denied. Remain resilient, invest in your education, and never stop believing in yourself. You have the power to create meaningful change.

GLAMOUR: What role do parents, schools, and communities play in supporting learners’ academic journeys?

Kimberly: Education is a collective responsibility. Parents provide encouragement, schools offer guidance, and communities create opportunities and support systems. When these three work together, learners are more likely to succeed academically and develop into confident, responsible individuals.

GLAMOUR: What lessons have you learned as a young entrepreneur and community leader?

Kimberly: One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that leadership is about service. I have learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and continuous learning. Building something meaningful requires patience and consistency, and success is measured not only by achievements, but by the positive impact you make in the lives of others.

GLAMOUR: What are your future plans and goals for Kim Tuition?

Kimberly: My vision is for Kim Tuition to grow into a fully-fledged school that caters especially to children with special educational needs. Having struggled academically myself, I understand what it feels like to need patience, understanding, and support.

I want to create a school where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential. My dream is to provide quality education, mentorship, and a nurturing environment where learners can thrive regardless of their challenges. I believe that a dream delayed is not a dream denied, and I hope Kim Tuition’s legacy will be one of transforming lives through inclusive education and creating opportunities for generations to come.

GLAMOUR: How can community members, businesses, or organisations support your mission of empowering learners through education?

Kimberly: Empowering young people requires a collective effort. Community members, businesses, and organisations can support our mission by investing in education, sponsoring learning materials, providing resources and a place to teach them. I currently teach in my yard and it’s difficult , and partnering with us to create opportunities for learners. Together, we can build a brighter future and empower the next Generation to succeed. Thank you so much and God bless.
