South Africa mourns media and culture icon Maria McCloy

The South African entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its most influential cultural figures, Maria McCloy, who has died at the age of 50.

According to a statement released by her family, McCloy passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg following heart failure.

For more than three decades, McCloy stood at the centre of South Africa’s entertainment, fashion and music industries, not always in front of the spotlight, but often shaping who entered it. She was a publicist, DJ, creative strategist, tastemaker and connector whose fingerprints can be found across generations of South African pop culture.

To many in the industry, she was more than a media personality. She was a builder of careers.

From music and television to fashion and youth culture, McCloy played a pivotal role in amplifying local talent at a time when South African creative industries were still finding their global identity. Tributes pouring in across social media describe her as a “culture architect”, “industry giant” and “a foundation stone” for the country’s modern entertainment scene.

Artists, journalists, designers and creatives have reflected on how McCloy opened doors, made introductions and championed emerging voices long before they became household names. Hip hop stars, television personalities and fashion creatives all benefited from her instinct for spotting talent early and pushing it into the mainstream.

"You brought so much love to our culture and lives and you are so so loved by us all!" South African musician Tamara Day shared her sentiments on Instagram; "Sweet, smart, down to earth, creative Queen your presence and energy will be sorely missed x Rest In peace darling"

TZKEE reflected on her passing, “You wrote the very first article published about us,”  “Thank you for being a day 1 believer and a foundation stone that shaped the ‘New South Africa’s’ youth culture. Rest now Maria McCloy. Your race is run. Thank you for time and we’ll see you out there.”

Photographer and founder of Manor Trevor Sturmaan, wrote "A world without Maria will never feel the same"

McCloy’s influence stretched far beyond publicity. She moved fluidly between industries, becoming known for her work as a DJ and fashion designer while maintaining a reputation as one of Johannesburg’s most connected cultural insiders. Her vibrant personal style and fearless creative energy made her instantly recognisable in entertainment circles.

She was also part of the generation that helped shape post-apartheid youth culture — documenting it, celebrating it and helping define what modern South African cool looked like.

In recent years, her accessories and fashion work continued to cement her legacy as a creative entrepreneur, with collaborations and designs that celebrated bold African expression.

As news of her passing spread, tributes from across the country painted a portrait of a woman whose impact extended beyond headlines and red carpets. Many described her as generous with knowledge, deeply passionate about music and fiercely committed to local creativity.

The family has requested privacy during this time and said details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course
