SADAG Launches New Free Online Arts and Crafts for Mental Wellness Support Group

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) announces the launch of a new Online Support Group that uses crafting as a tool to cope with Mental Health challenges. This unique Support Group will launch on Monday, 2 February 2026, at 8pm. Thereafter, meetings will take place bi-weekly on Mondays at 8pm.

Support Group Leader Jacinta shares her own lived experience, “About 11 years ago, after I had my first child, I suffered Post Natal Depression, and my self-confidence dipped. To restore my self-esteem I started attending therapy, in addition, I learned to sew and crochet. Making things activates creativity, and really helps in the processing of emotions,” she shares. “This let me to think there might be other people who may enjoy making things with their hands, which might be a helpful Mental Health tool.” The purpose of the Support Group is to encourage Members to use their creative skills as a way to process emotions and thoughts. It is open to anyone aged 18 and older who enjoys crafting and may be dealing with Mental Health issues such as Depression, Grief, Post Natal Depression, or Anxiety.

Jacinta explains that the Support Group is created to make room for creativity while encouraging the intentional use of crafting to support emotional wellbeing. “People will be able to learn more about how crafting supports Mental Health, while also connecting with others who understand the value of creativity in healing,” she says. Meetings will take place online, making it easy for Members to join from the comfort of their homes. The bi-monthly format ensures regular opportunities to engage, share, and explore how creative practices can be used as tools for coping. To join this Support Group or for more information, please contact Jacinta on 076 055 7961.
