Claire Mawisa shares her top 5 tips for dreads

A couple of days ago, media personality, Claire Mawisa took to Instagram to share her top tips for taking care of your dreadlocks.

She captioned a picture of herself getting her hair washed, with the following tips:

My top 5 (unscientific) tips that I have followed in my 13-year lock journey are:

1. I don’t twist too often. Once every 6 weeks/2 months. Even longer breaks if I can manage. I do not crotchet; I interlock when necessary. I trim weak or thinning ends often.

2. I have coloured my hair so many times, with different dye combinations, I wouldn’t be able to recreate the colour I have now. Plus, my colour has lightened after getting sunburnt.

3. My hair loves water! In summer I wash my hair almost daily and seal the moisture with a light oil. I spray my hair every morning in winter with a water-based solution I make.

4. I am not loyal to product names and ranges, as long as I can get the result I want.

5. My dreadlocks can’t do what yours can, and vice versa. I never go with a specific picture in mind when I get my hair styled because I trust the stylists at my salon to know what’s best for my very thick, dense and long hair.”

warning: this is a dreadlock post! i used to care for my own hair until the length made it too difficult to properly wash at home, that’s when i went in search of a salon. my salon home for the last few years has been indalo nubian naturals in joburg cbd (@smarty_misshair) my top 5 (unscientific) tips that i have followed in my 13 year lock journey are: 1. i don’t twist too often. once every 6 weeks/2 months… even longer breaks if i can manage. i do not crotchet. i interlock when necessary. i trim weak or thinning ends often. 2. i have coloured my hair so many times, with different dye combinations, i wouldn’t be able to recreate the colour i have now. plus my colour has lightened after getting sunburnt. 3. my hair loves water! in summer i wash my hair almost daily, and seal the moisture with a light oil. i spray my hair every morning in winter with a water based solution i make. 4. i am not loyal with product names and ranges, as long as i can get the result i want. open to hearing what you use and suggest. 5. my locks can’t do what yours can, and vice versa. i never go with a specific picture in mind when i get my hair styled, because i trust the stylists at my salon to know what’s best for my very thick, dense and long hair. i get so many loc questions, i’m sorry but i get lazy to answer them all 🙈 i hope this has helped a little 🤷🏽‍♀️
