Get your face beat on for monolids

Eyes are like boobs. Nobody has the same pair. In fact, you may have one eye completely different to the other. But no matter whether you have hooded eyes, almond-shaped, round or protruding, every eye shape is a canvas for amazing makeup looks. You just need to know how to work it. SO, monolids: The defining feature? The eye crease sits very close to the lash line, giving the illusion of little to no crease.

The pros? “You can wear interesting bright colours and textures in a way that double lids can’t,” says cruelty-free makeup artist, and Ecotools ambassador, Justine Jenkins. “You can also wear a glossy lid without worrying about creasing.”

The cons? “Applying defined eye makeup can be trickier”, says Justine.

But never fear, because with these tips you’ll be able to master makeup for your eye shape…

1. GO SOLO

Good news if you’re a lazy gal with monolids, because you can easily pull off singular eyeshadow, rather than blending three to four colours together.

“Monolids are perfect for pulling off a dramatic eye”, says Justine. “Use a single bold, bright colour that will make an impact, but [still] make sure to blend properly. Neon and bright eyeshadows are a big trend so experiment and have fun.”

2. GET YOUR GLOSS ON

Glossy eyes look great on Instagram, but for most eye shapes they can slip, slide and crease as soon as you’re finished.

But not monolids! Without a crease to crap all over your hard work, this wet-look trend will stay put for a lot longer.

Channel the makeup look from Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini at Milan Fashion Week by applying a pastel shade from the inner corner to your brow bone, blending down towards the outer corner of your eye.

Add a layer of gloss on top, plus a dab to highlight your cheekbone and BAM, you’re looking fresh and fab.

3. WORK YOUR LASHES

When applying your eye makeup, don’t forget about your lashes. Justine suggests curling them before applying mascara to help open up your eye.

If you have little to no eyelashes, extensions or a lash lift can add some flutter. And, of course, falsies are a temporary treat if you can manage to master them.

4. LEARN TO LOVE LINER

Monolids look amazing when the top lid is traced with eyeliner, just keep it as close to the lash line as possible.

Justine suggests using “an angled eyeliner brush with a gorgeous dark colour.” And to try adding a cat flick at the end for a more defined look.

When applying, look down into a mirror so you can see exactly where you’re applying.

“But keep checking the effect by looking straight ahead into a mirror, as the lid tends to disappear”, says Justine.

Try playing around with colour, too. We’re obsessed with this royal blue look from an Anna Sui show, and white liner is also very on trend RN.
