Shockwaves echoed through the industry at the unexpected exit of newly appointed Creative Director Dario Vitale at Versace. Immediately after the Prada group successfully acquired Versace a statement was released that recently appointed Dario Vitale would exit his role. This unexpected announcement caused quite a stir within the industry as he only showcased one collection since his appointment a few months prior.
Speculation is rife on who would potentially be filling the role. Anthony Vaccarello's name has been rumoured to replace him but insiders reveal that he is firmly entrenched at Saint Laurent and will not be moving anywhere. Dario left is role as design director at Miu Miu after being with the brand for 14 years before exiting to take up the role at Versace. His future under the group since the announcement is uncertain.
2025 was indeed a year of Creative Director shakeups. His appointment signalled a dawning of a new era at the Italian house. His one and only collection was met with excitement by the fashion set and was seen as a positive step in the houses new direction. Personally I felt the collection was devoid of anything Versace in its current era. I do understand that Dario referenced the archives in order to create the collection he presented and that this was his interpretation of the new Versace. Granted some pieces were really great but in my personal opinion there was no cohesiveness to the offering. Some of the very 80's inspired looks felt very 80s and not necessarily in the way that I would want to recreate in 2025. Whether this is the reason Dario was relieved of his position or some internal creative struggles we have no concept of I would not have chosen for him to be replaced. The fashion industries desire to replace designers after one or two shows I feel is extremely unfair, as it takes time to acclimate to a new appointment and house.
Building something truly worthwhile and lasting requires patience, sustained effort, and, most importantly, adequate support and time from the executive level. The short leash given to high-profile designers like Vitale risks fostering creative anxiety and stifling the development of a truly impactful vision.
We look forward with anticipation for the announcement of the designer who gets to lead the House of Versace into its new era. And we wish Vitale well wherever he finds himself in the new year.
