In an exclusive interview, Glamour chats with Mexican fashion designer Lorena Saravia about her exciting collaboration with the retail giant H&M. Lorena joins the esteemed ranks of designers who have collaborated with H&M, solidifying her place in the hall of fame of designer collaborations. The collection showcases the designer’s signature sensibility, characterised by an empowering, contemporary spirit and a deep connection to her heritage.
Glamour: Congratulations on your collaboration with H&M. What does it mean to be included in the hall of fame of iconic designers to collaborate with H&M?
Lorena Saravia: This is truly a milestone in my career. I've always admired the H&M collaborations, and I own several pieces from previous collections. The opportunity to work with H&M, especially as a new designer in Mexico, was extraordinary in terms of both experience and the visibility it brings to my brand.
G: What inspired the collection, and how were you able to ensure that your brand ethos and aesthetic were not compromised?
LS: When I started designing 15 years ago, I wanted to create something distinctly Mexican that embodied quality, impeccable cut, and contemporary style for the modern woman. Mexico is often perceived as a macho society, but women have always been a formidable force. Mexican women possess a unique kind of power, a strong, magnetic quality that makes them feel invincible. The same themes very much informed this collaboration, and I was given the freedom to express myself.
G: Can you share some of the techniques used in designing and crafting this beautiful collection?
LS: I was very inspired by the elegance and strength found in traditional Mexican tailoring — garments that carry intention and identity. We focused on the silhouette, the cut, the construction, and the details, like the buttons, which hold subtle power.
G: As an independent brand, what does it mean to have your brand become accessible to the rest of the world?
LS: The opportunity to work with H&M, especially as a new designer in Mexico, was extraordinary in terms of both experience and the visibility it brings to my brand.
G: What is your favourite piece of the collection?
LS: That’s hard to choose, but I live in the cowboy boots — they hold a special significance, embodying our craftsmanship and heritage — and also the denim jacket is part of my daily uniform.
The collection will be available to shop on the 16th October via Superbalist and in store at H&M Sandton City.
