The world mourns the loss of legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani.
Last night news broke that Giorgio Armani, Italian fashion designer whose contributions shaped the landscape of fashion globally, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones. The designer worked tirelessly up until his death at the age of 91. This year the brand celebrates their 50 year anniversary and celebrations were underway in honour of this milestone with an event planned for next month.
His death is a devastating loss to the fashion industry as his designs have left an indelible mark in the world. Tributes from celebrities and fashion insiders have been flooding in, each fondly reminiscing and recounting special moments. Supermodel Naomi Campbell recently shared a tribute in honour of his passing. She recounted their years working together in the early part of her career and a very vivid memory of his passion and his vision for each runway show. Every look, hairstyle and makeup look was meticulously planned out and executed and no one was allowed to deviate from his vision. A video circulating on Instagram, of Giorgio backstage at one of his shows doing a final check on a model and touching up her makeup to his satisfaction is a testament to his hands on approach. Such was his attention to detail that he would undertake to do it himself regardless of the teams surrounding him.
Well known for his sartorial elegance Giorgio Armani was credited with redefining elegance through understated luxury. His design ethos was clean lines and a more relaxed and fluid silhouette in contrast to more structured design offerings of that time. Dubbed the "King of the Blazer" he designed a longer-cut suit jacket, loosely pleated trousers and floor-sweeping belted coats offering a new approach to dressing. American Gigolo, starring Richard Gere, featured Giorgio Armani exclusively in the film and became the turning point in the designers career. The genesis of fusion in fashion and film and its undeniable power. This movie ushered in a new era of dressing, effortless Italian style that he himself would embody up until his death.
With his passing we can only imagine what the future holds and trust that the new era of Giorgio Armani will be as impactful as its past. Rest in Peace Mr. Armani and thank you for gracing the world with your talent. Ciao!
