The 2023 Oscars marked the first year that the awards ceremony came with a sustainable fashion guide for guests, put together by RCGD Global – the organisation founded by Suzy Amis Cameron in 2009. “The guide is designed to tackle the confusion around the word sustainability and show simple solutions that anyone can follow,” Samata Pattinson, CEO of RCGD – which has also partnered with organisations such as Tencel to bring eco-conscious fashion to the red carpet – tells Vogue. “[It] gives our organisation visibility to people who can step out on the world’s biggest red carpet and advocate for something more meaningful.”
Fittingly then, a series of celebrities championed sustainable fashion on the Oscars red-carpet, including Cate Blanchett, who has shown a quiet commitment to eco-minded dressing this entire awards season. The actor opted for an archival Louis Vuitton top for the occasion, which she paired with a black maxi skirt, also from the French fashion house, which was made from sustainably-sourced silk.
Other actors to opt for more conscious designs included Naomi Scott, who wore a custom Chloé dress made from lower-impact wool at the Vanity Fair Oscar party; Olivia Wilde, who opted for a responsibly-sourced silk-wool dress, featuring exposed bra detailing, by Gabriela Hearst’s eponymous sustainably-focused label; and Bailey Bass, who wore an off-white halterneck design by Zac Posen, made from Tencel Luxe.
Meanwhile, a wave of other attendees opted for vintage on the red carpet. Rooney Mara, for example, wore a white empire-waisted gown from Alexander McQueen’s famous “The Girl Who Lived in the Tree” collection from autumn/winter 2008 collection, while Kendall Jenner wore a Jean Paul Gaultier gown from the brand’s spring/summer 2008 haute couture collection, paying homage to the dress that Marion Cotillard wore when she picked up the Oscar for Best Actress that year.
