Review: The latest trending story on Netflix, Straw and the reality of a mother having to fight for her daughter

Straw by Tyler Perry is a film that makes us reflect on a harsh reality and the difficulties that many women (and men) face in protecting their children and giving them a decent life, and the extremes to which they can go in a desperate situation.

It's a moving film that tells a heartbreaking story and follows a woman who, faced with an increasingly complicated situation, reaches the limits of her patience and ends up exploding in an unexpected way.

In this story, everything that can go wrong does, anxiety increases, but so do fear and frustration, and all of this becomes a recipe for disaster.

Just days after its release, Straw (a thriller filled with increasingly extreme twists) has become one of Netflix 's most-watched films , and an important story that reflects society, from the perspective of a woman who commits a violent act when she believes she has no more options.

What is Harta on Netflix about?

Starring Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson of Hidden Figures and Abbott Elementary, the Netflix film follows single mother Janiyah whose life begins to unravel after a series of unexpected events begin when her daughter (a seizure-prone girl who requires extensive medical care that mounts up the family’s bills) is taken away from her by the child protection agency (after bruises are discovered on the girl and she fails to pay for her lunch at school), while she tries to earn enough money to support her and avoid losing her home.

Janiyah tries to explain that her daughter is not being abused, that the bruises are the result of a fall the girl had, and that she works day and night to give her a good life, but no one listens to her and the girl is taken away.

Losing her daughter is “the final straw” and Janiyah is desperate, but as things get worse (she experiences racism, a botched robbery, and an accusation that gets her even deeper into trouble), she is driven to commit an act of violence, believing this is the only way to save her life and get her daughter back.

The film has a very tough ending, full of complicated emotions, where it becomes clear that both Janiyah and her daughter were victims of a broken system, and that it was never going to help them.

Is Fed Up a true story?

No, Straw is not based on a true story, but it does seek to reflect the different realities that many people, especially women, face in today's world.

According to Decider , Perry wrote the story after hearing Angie Stone's song "20 Dollars ," which tells the story of a woman desperate for money to feed her baby. Perry wanted to show the struggles people in this situation face, who can't seem to find a way to change their fate because the world won't allow it.

Furthermore, the director and writer also drew inspiration from his own life and wanted to pay tribute to the millions of people around the world who struggle with everything they have to try to change their lives, especially single mothers who face many difficulties in caring for their children and giving them a good life.

“The film represents three different types of Black women, who are all the same Black woman, who have different social backgrounds and different stages of success, but who can empathize with each other,” Tyler Perry told Netflix.
