Introducing Pantone’s 2023 Colour of the Year: Viva Magenta

Hello December! The holiday season is home to one of the most highly anticipated events of the calendar: the Pantone Colour of the Year announcement. Recently, the global brand shared their pick for 2023: and it’s called Viva Magenta. The tone is described as a crimson red shade and according to Pantone, Viva Magenta is ‘an unconventional shade for an unconventional time: a new vision.’

Established in 2000, the Pantone Colour of the Year announcement has grown into one of the key authority sources on determining what trends will impact the world. The extensive research, presentations and discussions lead to a considered colour choice we’ll see across a variety of industries. Last year’s pick was Veri Peri, a vibrant blue purple that added a beautiful pop of colour to any interior space.

According to the official Pantone Colour Institute website, Viva Magenta is ‘brave and fearless, a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy.’

Leatrice Eiseman, who is the Executive Director at the Pantone Color Institute explains, ‘In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.’

If we take a look at the other leading paint and colour brands, the colour of the year picks are varied and diverse. For 2023, there seems to be a trend of light, airy neutrals or deep, intense shades that make a statement.
