Why Revlon and GLAMOUR Chose a Software Engineer as South Africa's New Cover Girl

The “Revlon x GLAMOUR Unforgettable Cover Girl” search wasn't about finding the perfect face. It was about finding a woman whose story deserved to be seen.

When Revlon South Africa and GLAMOUR launched the search for an “Unforgettable Cover Girl, the goal was never to crown another beauty queen. Instead, they invited everyday South African women to step into a space traditionally reserved for celebrities and public figures, asking one simple question: What makes you unforgettable?

The response was extraordinary.

Thousands of women from across the country entered, each bringing a story of resilience, ambition, courage and self-belief. Choosing a winner wasn't about finding someone who fit a conventional mould. It was about finding someone who embodied the confidence to embrace every part of herself.

That woman was Mikateko Ngobeni.

A 26-year-old software engineer, content creator and innovator from Johannesburg, Mikateko represents a new generation of women who refuse to be defined by a single title. She builds technology, creates digital content, plays classical piano and even designed her own smart mirror. But she insists none of those achievements came from being extraordinary. "They happened because I realised the biggest thing standing between me and the life I wanted was often myself," she says. "As long as you don't let fear, doubt or imposter syndrome convince you otherwise, you're capable of achieving far more than you think."

Ironically, self-doubt once almost dictated every decision she made. She considered abandoning technology because she didn't see women who looked like her in the industry. She held back from leadership opportunities at university because she questioned whether her voice mattered. Even posting videos online felt intimidating because she assumed no one would ever watch them.

What changed wasn't perfection. It was choosing to believe in herself anyway. "My faith, my husband, my friends and my family believed in me long before I did," she says. "Eventually, I decided to bank on myself too." That mindset is exactly what resonated with the judging panel.

According to Heather Goate, Marketing Director for Revlon South Africa, the search reflected how the brand's understanding of beauty has evolved. "Today's consumers are looking for authenticity," she explains. "This wasn't about casting another face for a campaign. It was about creating an opportunity for everyday South African women to step into the spotlight and own it."

Captured together, the top 5 finalists embody the spirit of the Revlon x GLAMOUR campaign—celebrating authenticity and individuality.

For Revlon, being unforgettable in 2026 has little to do with traditional beauty standards.

"It's about having the confidence to own your individuality, back yourself and show up unapologetically," says Goate. "We celebrate women who are ambitious, fearless, creative and willing to challenge expectations." That philosophy made South Africa the natural home for the campaign.

"Every day we see women breaking barriers, building careers, supporting families and creating opportunities despite the challenges they face," she says. "We wanted to celebrate women who don't wait for permission or perfect circumstances. They simply keep moving forward."

Among thousands of entries, Mikateko's immediately stood apart. "We weren't looking for perfection," says Goate. "We were looking for women who genuinely embodied what it means to be unforgettable and unstoppable."

While her impressive achievements certainly caught attention, it was the mindset behind them that ultimately made the difference. "Whether it was graduating magna cum laude, becoming a software engineer, creating content or building her own smart mirror, every achievement reflected someone who consistently chose to believe in herself and take action."

For Mikateko, the cover represents far more than a personal milestone. "It means such a great deal," she says. "More than anything, I hope people walk away remembering that, out of all the obstacles life will inevitably throw your way, don't let yourself be one of them."

She also hopes her story challenges the idea that women have to fit neatly into one category.

"Being multifaceted is a superpower," she says. "You can spend your day solving software engineering problems and then head off to classical piano lessons afterwards. You don't have to fit into one box or look a certain way to belong."

As South Africa celebrates Women's Month, she has one message for every woman still waiting until she feels "ready."

"I hope you never shrink yourself to fit into a version of the world that was never designed with you in mind," she says. "Ask the questions. Apply for the opportunity. Start the business. Walk into the room before you feel ready. And remember, it's never too late."

Perhaps that's exactly why Mikateko belongs on the cover. Not because she represents perfection, but because she reminds every woman reading GLAMOUR that the life she wants may begin with one simple decision: saying yes to herself.
