Glamour’s Editor-in-Chief got a Vampire Facial and this was her experience

Loved and made popular by the likes of Kim Kardashian and other celebrities, the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment - aka the Vampire Facial - has been at the top of my list of facials to try. Yet each time I contemplate doing it, I change my mind.

The grim-looking image of Kim K covered in what appears to be blood plastered on her face during a PRP treatment haunts me…a lot.

Since then, I’ve done a lot of reading on the treatment and spoken to several professionals who swear by the results.

I recently did a Dr.Vampire Facial Treatment (3D MD PRP Facial), an advanced version of the PRP facial, with Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates.

Here’s what you should know:

WHAT IS THE DR VAMPIRE PRP FACIAL?

The PRP is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilises the powerful regenerative properties of one's platelet rich plasma, which contains factors that stimulate collagen and elastin, as well as the humectant hyaluronic acid.

The procedure involves taking a sample of your blood and isolating the protein-rich plasma and platelets to create the PRP.

The sample is spun inside a centrifuge to extract protein-rich plasma. The platelets are thereafter removed and the concentrated PRP is injected to your face.

This version of the PRP also includes a sterile hyaluronic acid with a specifically chosen active ingredient to tend to your individual needs for improved skin rejuvenation.

The Dr Vampire facial treatment aims to give the skin a healthy radiant glow, and a more youthful-looking skin, and the effects of the facial treatment appear in a few weeks and could last up to 12 months.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

Step 1: Blood collection

Your blood is drawn usually on your arm.

Step 2: Spin

The blood is then spun in a centrifuge for about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Injection

The platelet-rich plasma is superficially injected using a Mesotherapy technique. I found this to be the most painful part of the procedure (pain levels 6/10)

The aesthetic doctor works quickly and the pain is tolerable…just breathe.

Topical anaesthesia is applied about 30 minutes before micro needling and you also have the option of taking oral pain killers beforehand if you have increased sensibility.

The entire procedure takes about 90 minutes to complete and I was sent home with an after procedure kit.

THE TREATMENT

Cleansed face just before treatment.
Numbing gel on and just before the platelet-rich plasma is superficially injected using a Mesotherapy technique. I found this to be the most painful part of the procedure (pain level 6/10).
During microneedling to even out the skin and open my pores for better product absorption.

AFTER THE TREATMENT

After the 90-minute procedure. My skin was very tender and a bit red on the cheeks and forehead. A moisturiser and sunscreen was applied on my face before I left.
The golden platelet-rich plasma.
Day 1: The first day after the PRP procedure I woke up with a still very tender face. The redness had gone away but I still had needle bumps on my neck, which went away after three days or so.My skin felt dehydrated and tight so I avoided wearing makeup and just moisturiser and sunscreen.
Day 7: A week after the procedure I started seeing impressive results such as an improvement on my skin texture, a more balanced skin tone overall and less pigmentation, better hydration and a brighter skin GLOW.
