Here’s everything you need to know about the candid documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me and how to watch it.

What is Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me about?

According to Apple TV’s synopsis, “After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light.”

This documentary reveals the actor and singer’s struggles and successes since starting her career as a Disney star and rising to fame. Directed by Alek Keshishian, most known for the hit 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare, this documentary follows Gomez on tour, her trip to Kenya, her struggles with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, and also Gomez in and out of treatment facilities due to her life-threatening lupus disease. Just over 10 years ago she was diagnosed with lupus and received a kidney transplant from her friend Francia Raisa. The documentary gives unprecedented insight into what was going on in Gomez’s head and body, particularly in 2019, when she was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder and her struggle to later share it publicly.

What else can be expected from the documentary?

Gomez reveals her new song ‘My Mind & Me’ in the documentary and the vulnerable lyrics further delve into her mental health struggles.

My mind and me

We don't get along sometimes

And it gets hard to breathe

But I wouldn't change my life

In the documentary Gomez asks, “How do I learn to breathe my own breath again?”

Does the documentary mention her relationship with Justin Bieber?

Fans may be hoping for a glimpse into Gomez’s relationship with her ex Justin Bieber but it was barely mentioned in her My Mind & Me documentary. Gomez and Bieber ended their 10-year on-off relationship in 2018 and months later Bieber was quickly engaged and married to model Hailey Bieber. Even though My Mind & Me started filming in 2016, the focus of the documentary is on Gomez’s mental and physical health, her recovery and finding her purpose.

"Everything was so public," Gomez says in the documentary. Paparazzi footage is included in the film and shows the public and press interest in their breakup. In the documentary she speaks about her insecurities, heartbreak and moving on from the breakup that no one wanted to let go of but Gomez admits that the difficult breakup was ultimately the best thing that happened to her. Recently Gomez was photographed with Hailey Bieber at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles proving that they have moved on and are on good terms.

The documentary is an inspiration to many

Ultimately, the documentary reveals the pressures Gomez puts on herself, her mistakes and the lessons learned. “This is the beginning for me,” she says in the documentary. Gomez shares every side of herself and is an inspiration to focus on your journey, to rediscover yourself, find purpose and put yourself first. We are, after all, a work in progress. Her documentary tells her story but encourages others to write their own.
