Tyla names Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa as the first South African pop stars she admired

When asked about the first woman whose career she admired, she didn’t hesitate, she mentioned the legendary Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa, two of South Africa’s pioneering pop icons.

“I really admired Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa,” Tyla said. “They were like our pop stars.” Reflecting on her childhood in South Africa, she added, “Their music was just so infectious, it was everywhere. And they were women ,  it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

The legacies of Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa continue to inspire generations. From their 1990s and early-2000s hits to their electrifying live performances that brought stadiums to a standstill, their impact on South African music is immeasurable.
