If there’s one thing Tyla knows how to do, it’s make a moment. Fresh from her SAMA32 homecoming, the global superstar brought her A*POP era back to Johannesburg for an unforgettable fan appreciation day at Gold Reef City on Sunday, 16 August.
And no, this was not your average theme-park outing.
For one day, Gold Reef City became A*POP land, with Tyla turning the iconic Joburg attraction into a colourful celebration of her sophomore album and the fans who have been with her since day one. The takeover was created in partnership with South African Tourism and powered by Absa.
The experience was designed to feel like stepping directly into Tyla’s world. Fans were greeted by pink A*POP branding, photo booths, merchandise activations and face-painting stations where tiger stripes quickly became the unofficial beauty look of the day. And, naturally, the fashion followed. Think low-rise jeans, tiny tops, tiger prints and plenty of Tyla-inspired looks.
The singer had also made the experience accessible to her biggest supporters, giving away 1,000 tickets through TikTok and Instagram challenges centred around their favourite A*POP songs. Fans who made the cut were treated to food vouchers and goodie bags, turning the day into much more than a traditional fan event.
Then Tyla arrived, and naturally, all hell broke loose.
The singer pulled up in a red Viano, greeting fans from the sunroof as crowds gathered around her. Screaming fans, phones in the air and security trying to keep everyone moving? Very much part of the experience. At one point, Tyla even reminded security to be gentle with the younger fans as the crowd pushed forward.
There were emotional moments too. Some of Tyla’s youngest fans reportedly burst into tears when they got close enough to meet her, while one fan even asked if she could pray for the star. Tyla agreed, embracing the moment before hugging her.
What made the whole experience particularly special, though, was the location. Gold Reef City isn't simply another Johannesburg venue for Tyla. The singer has spoken about the importance of returning home and reconnecting with her roots after spending so much of her career travelling the world.
And perhaps that's what made the takeover feel so authentic. Tyla could have celebrated A*POP anywhere in the world, but she chose to bring the experience home—to Johannesburg, to her fans and to a place that holds its own memories for many South Africans.
There was something wonderfully nostalgic about watching one of the country's biggest global stars essentially turn a childhood playground into her personal pop universe. Between the rides, the face paint, the screaming Tygers and the soundtrack of A*POP playing throughout the day, it was equal parts theme park, album launch and very glamorous fan day.
Tyla herself seemed just as overwhelmed by the response. “I know I’m a pop star, but I’ll never get used to this,” she reportedly told the crowd.
Honestly? We hope she never does.
Because if A*POP Gold Reef City is anything to go by, Tyla's relationship with home—and with the fans who helped get her here, is only getting bigger.
