SAMA32: Winners, fashion moments and highlights from the 2026 South African Music Awards

The 32nd South African Music Awards (SAMA32) brought together some of the biggest names in South African music and entertainment for a night that celebrated the country's sound, style and global influence. Held at the Sun City Superbowl on 15 August, this year's ceremony embraced the theme “The Future Sounds Like Now Now”—and, judging by the night's biggest moments, the future is looking very good.

Hosted by Cassper Nyovest and Zanele Potelwa, with Fresh By Caddy and Munaka Muthambi taking over the red carpet, the ceremony had plenty of star power from the moment guests arrived. Cassper's return to the SAMA stage as host was particularly notable, marking his first time hosting the awards after years of not attending the ceremony.

And then came the fashion. The red carpet gave us everything from bold tailoring and dramatic silhouettes to statement accessories and glamorous gowns. There was no shortage of personality, with celebrities leaning into looks that felt considered, expressive and, most importantly, fun. But naturally, some moments stood out more than others—and Tyla's arrival was one of them.

The global superstar made her highly anticipated return to South Africa for SAMA32, where she was honoured with the AfriPure International Achievement Award. The recognition marked another major milestone in a career that has seen the Johannesburg-born singer take South African music and culture to audiences around the world.

Receiving the award from Bonang Matheba made the moment even more special. Returning to the SAMA stage after almost a decade, Bonang was the perfect person to present the honour to Tyla. Seeing two generations of South African women who have built globally recognised careers sharing the stage was one of the night's standout moments.

Tyla's acceptance speech was equally memorable. Reflecting on her journey, she spoke about how attending the SAMAs had been a dream since she was young and proudly celebrated her South African roots. She also brought fellow South African artists onto the stage, turning what could have been a personal victory into a celebration of the wider music community.

The night's winners reflected the incredible diversity of South African music. HLE was among the biggest winners, taking home Album of the Year for The Ground We're On as well as Female Artist of the Year. Mzukulu claimed Male Artist of the Year, while Amadodana Ase Wesile won Duo/Group of the Year.

In Amapiano, Kabza De Small took home Best Amapiano Album for Bab'Motha, while DJ Maphorisa and Xduppy won Most Streamed Song of the Year for Ngomoya. Will Linley won Best Pop Album for Don't Cry Because It's Over, while Brendan Peyper took home the award for Beste Pop Album for Troumateriaal.

Elsewhere, veteran music powerhouse Oskido was celebrated with the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his decades-long contribution to South African music and the influence he continues to have on the industry.

But beyond the trophies, SAMA32 felt like a celebration of where South African culture is right now. The music is travelling further, the fashion is becoming increasingly fearless and our biggest stars are moving confidently between local and global stages.
