Today in underwear news, Skims has produced a line of hairy thongs. Yes, Kim Kardashian is making merkins now.
Skims, the shapewear/lingerie/underwear/anything goes line of flesh-toned garments founded by Kardashian, announced its latest product drop on Tuesday, October 14 with a clip on Instagram of a '70s-style video asking that age-old question: “Does the carpet match the drapes?”
Commenters immediately began to debate how seriously the pubic—I mean, public—should be taking this product. “Smart way to bring people to your website, have them laughing, then them ending up buying actual cute stuff they don’t even need. Genius e-commerce team 👏” wrote one commenter. “This would be amazing for cancer and alopecia patients.❤️” added another. While others wrote some version of, “No one asked for this.”
Still, one must wonder. There was the face wrap that divided the internet. People laughed at the “nipple bra" at first (which is currently donating ten percent of its proceeds to a breast cancer charity…for this week only) but now it has good reviews. Who knows, maybe Kardashian is onto something with this line of faux-fur string thongs?
On the site, most straight sizes sold out quickly, leaving only 2X and above in many of the colors and shades. Across the skintone spectrum, the red “hair” seems to be the most available. (And no, it's not made with hair, it's plastic.)
In a press release, Skims calls it the brand's “most daring panty yet.” It continues, “Hand-made in a super sheer, stretch mesh, this string thong features a mix of curly and straight faux hair in twelve different shade variations. With this iconic new panty, your carpet can be whatever color you want it to be.” It seems the idea isn't that this will replace hair you can grow yourself, but rather be more like a Halloween wig, allowing you to try another color without making a commitment, an idea I've genuinely never had considered before.
On her own Instagram Stories, Kardashian showed a quick video of the inventory and said, “how funny are these merkins, you guys?…it's insane.”
