It’s officially the season of love — which usually guarantees an influx of wedding invitations. These simple guidelines will ensure your wedding guest attire is both stylish and respectful — so the true stars of the day can shine brightest.
DON’T: Choose colours that clash
Avoid white, off -white and cream. White is a colour that is traditionally reserved for the bride — unless it has been specified prior to the wedding that the bride requests her guests to wear white. For evening or late afternoon weddings, gowns with intricate sequins, beading, or other shimmering embellishments in deeper, richer hues will highlight ambient lighting. On the other hand, morning and midday weddings call for lighter, more subdued styles. Since daylight naturally highlights softer colours, choose muted tones, pastels or elegant floral prints(subtle shimmer and delicate embroidery are acceptable too).
Over-accessorise: With jewellery, the number-one rule is balance. A good guideline is to choose one statement piece for your upper body and one for your lower body, never both in the same area. You want to highlight one area and create a focal point, not overwhelm your look with competing pieces.
For example
:• Upper body: Pair a statement necklace with understated earrings (simple studs or small drop earrings) and vice versa.
• Lower body: On your hands and wrists, choose either a dramatic/statement ring on one hand or a bold statement bracelet on the other. Avoid both on both sides.
When choosing a bag...
• DO add a clutch or a small/mini shoulder bag to complement your look. These are a lot chicer and more aesthetically pleasing.
• DO’NT carry an oversized, large or medium sized bag. These can distract from your outfit and throw your look off balance.
DO: Consider location and weather
This is another important factor and will save you a lot of unnecessary hassle when putting together your look. If it’s a garden wedding or beach wedding, you’d want to avoid stilettos — which might get stuck in grass, or sink in sand. Instead, choose a wedge or a block heel. The weather can also affect your choices — especially if it’s unpredictable. You should plan for cold, wind, rain or full sun depending on the location. If the weather forecast shows a hot, humid day, invest in a chic parasol to keep you safe from the harsh sun and prevent sunburn.
Pay attention to the dress code
When you receive the invite, one of the first things you should do is take note of the dress code — and if they stipulate a specific colour scheme. It is very common in 2025 to have guests wear specific colours to create aesthetically pleasing photo moments.
Lastly, enjoy the celebrations! Raise a glass to the happy couple and enjoy dancing the day or night away!
