This August, Mzansi Magic Bioskop is shining a spotlight on the best of homegrown storytelling with the premiere of Nthabiseng, a movie that explores grief, healing and the emotional strength that many women carry.
Premiering on Women’s Day - Sunday, 9 August at 20:00, the movie tells the story of Nthabiseng played by Didi Makobane (Cobrizi), a young woman who takes on a job within a grieving family of widower Zamani played by Sparky Xulu (Kwa Baba, Law, Love & Betrayal) and daughter Mbali played by Paballo Landu who are struggling with grief after the death of the wife and Mother of the home. Also featuring Mme Lillian Dube as Mme Moholo, a traditional matriarch who upholds structure and discipline within the home.
After the loss, Zamani is left to navigate the challenges of single parenthood and although he tries his best, there is a noticeable emotional distance growing between him and his daughter. But things take a turn when Nthabiseng, a warm and ambitious young woman arrives to assist the family. Through her patience, kindness and unwavering compassion, she becomes a source of comfort for Mbali and a quiet support system for Zamani, which unexpectedly develops into something more.
Produced by Calltime Studios, Nthabiseng comes during a month that recognises and honours a woman’s emotional strength and compassion, and how they can hold families and communities together, often without recognition.
According to producer Tebogo Tebxa Mabaso, from the beginning the goal was to create a film that feels intimate, relatable and proudly South African.
“We wanted audiences to recognise themselves in these characters, their struggles and their triumphs. Nthabiseng is ultimately a celebration of resilience, family and the quiet acts of kindness that have the power to change lives and we are proud to bring this story to audiences and hope it sparks conversations about love, healing and the value of human connection,” says Tebogo.
Other notable Mzansi cast members include Kamo Modisakeng as Tessa, and Dumisani Dlamini as The Taxi Driver.
