South Africa’s biggest live concert company, Big Concerts, sent fans into a frenzy this week after posting a cryptic message on Instagram hinting at the possible arrival of the world’s biggest K-pop group, and yes, we’re talking about BTS. The caption read: “Mzansi ARMY, what do you think? Should BTS light up South Africa with a live show?” Within minutes, the post sparked chaos in the comments, with fans begging for confirmation, tagging friends, and flooding timelines with purple hearts.
The post didn’t confirm anything officially, but that didn’t stop the internet from exploding. K-pop fans across Mzansi, known for their passion and power, immediately began speculating, trending hashtags, and manifesting a BTS tour stop on African soil. Whether it was a test to “see the hype” or a real teaser, one thing is crystal clear: Mzansi is more than ready for BTS.
For those few still unfamiliar (where have you been?), BTS is a seven-member group from South Korea known for their infectious blend of music, dance, and style. Rising to global fame in the mid-2010s, their breakout hit “DNA” and later smash singles like “Dynamite”, “Butter”, and “Boy With Luv” cemented their global superstar status. They’ve collaborated with major artists like Halsey, Nicki Minaj, Coldplay, and Lizzo, and have sold out stadiums from Seoul to New York, even performing at the Grammy Awards and addressing the United Nations.
But despite their global reach, BTS has never performed in Africa, and fans have been waiting patiently (and loudly) for that to change. So, if Big Concerts is indeed bringing BTS to our shores, they’re about to make South African pop culture history. Until then, the ARMY is watching, hoping, and ready.
