In today’s culture, the phrase “be your own boss” rings out from podcasts, social media captions, and YouTube ads alike. While entrepreneurship can be deeply empowering, Registered Counsellor, Melissa Davids warns that the constant glamorisation of this lifestyle online can quietly take a toll on your mental health, whether you’re climbing the corporate ladder or building your own business.
For many women thriving in corporate jobs, there’s a rising pressure to "escape the 9 to 5." Social media is flooded with stories of women quitting their jobs, starting businesses, and claiming time, money, and freedom. It can make stable careers feel dull, uninspiring, or even like a failure. The result? Many women begin to question their path, lose confidence in their choices, and experience burnout trying to juggle their careers while secretly building a business on the side just to feel “on par.”
On the other hand, women who’ve embraced entrepreneurship often find themselves battling mental health storms; ones not often shown in the highlight reels. The uncertainty of income, the constant pressure to show up online, and the fear of failure can create deep anxiety and isolation. When entrepreneurship is sold as the ultimate form of success, struggling business owners may feel ashamed for needing rest, stability, or even a regular paycheck.
Here’s the truth: both paths are valid. Success is not defined by your job title or business card, but by how aligned your choices are with your values, energy, and purpose.
As women, we need to normalize choosing differently without shame. Some find joy in climbing the corporate ladder, others in building empires from scratch, and many walk the line between both.
Let’s shift the narrative from comparison to clarity. Ask yourself:
- What season of life am I in?
- What kind of structure or freedom do I need right now?
- Am I chasing something because it’s mine to chase or because it looks shiny online?
Glamour is good marketing but mental health is real life. Choose what nurtures your peace.
