Gigi Hadid to everyone shaming her weight: ‘I will not further explain the way my body looks’

Gigi Hadid has, unfortunately, dealt with body-shamers for her entire career. Her clap-backs date back to as early as 2015, when she opened up on Instagram about not having the same body type as other models in fashion shows. “Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I’m not asking for special treatment,” she wrote.

But now she’s receiving trolly comments on the other end of the spectrum: for seemingly being “too thin.” Yet another example of why women can’t win on social media—no matter what they do or say or look like, someone will always have something negative to say. Don’t we know by now it’s not OK to comment on anyone’s body ever? Under any circumstances?

Well, Hadid reiterated this once again on Twitter, and she opened up about something else as well: having Hashimoto’s Disease, a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid. In a series of tweets, Hadid reveals it’s this disease—not drugs or excessive dieting, as so many have speculated—that’s caused the change in her appearance.

“For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that,” Hadid tweeted.

She continued, “Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc … I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out. Although stress & excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better. I may be ‘too skinny’ for u, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and am still learning and growing with my body everyday, as everyone is.”

Hadid then doubled-down on the fact she shouldn’t have to be defending her body to anyone and also shut down speculation she’s thinner because of drug use. “I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit ur ‘beauty’ expectation, shouldn’t have to. Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because u don’t understand the way my body has matured,” she wrote.

The model ended things with a call for people to be more positive on social media. “Please, as social media users & human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t,” she said. Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Several of Hadid’s famous friends applauded her for talking about this so transparently on Twitter. “Can’t wait to see you in Milan,” Ruby Rose wrote. “Sorry you too have to explain something so ridiculous to people. Love to you. Love to the people who try to tear down others also because they are just people who haven’t had the spiritual growth that needs to occur to love and accept one another.”

Chrissy Teigen showed her solidarity in the most Chrissy Teigen way possible. “alternate tweet: ‘fuck off’ ❤️” she wrote. Honestly, she isn’t wrong.
